EMPLOYMENT SUMMARY

Full-Time, non-exempt position.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required; and a minimum of one year of custodial experience is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software and other related software.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

COMPUTER SKILLS

None needed.
Licenses & Certifications: First Aid and CPR/AED certification required (certifications may be obtained within the first month of employment).

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Accidents are improbable outside of temporary minor injuries such as cuts, bruises or sprains. Work conditions may vary depending upon the location of job tasks required; may occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. While working indoors, the lighting and temperature are adequate. The work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations and dampness. While working outdoors, the work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, dust, pollens and other environmental risks.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Custodian II, the Custodian is responsible for all aspects of general cleaning and custodial care in the SMSU independently or with a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Provides custodial support, responds to custodial/cleaning emergencies, cleans and maintains assigned areas, dusts and cleans all surfaces; clean glass doors, windows, and blinds; clean off graffiti; clean furniture and upholstery.
• Removes trash and recyclables; cleans and disinfects restrooms and replenishes supplies. Gathers and delivers recyclables to areas of central aggregation.
• Conducts general housekeeping, including clean light fixtures; polish woodwork and metal surfaces; clean stairwells, walkways, and elevators.
• Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, and buffs floors, vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets, cares for powered floor cleaning equipment.
• Replaces bulbs in light fixtures, arranges and sets up furniture, equipment, supports event set up and clean up, including moving bleachers.
• Makes minor repairs and adjustments to furniture and equipment, such as oiling doors, tightening screws and replacing foots on chairs and tables.
• Monitors use of assigned areas, unlocking as needed and safeguarding from unauthorized access by locking doors and windows.
• Reports facility repair needs identified during rounds, check fire extinguishers to ensure they are full and operational.
• Operates and maintains equipment, tools, supplies, and materials to perform assigned duties; organize work materials and equipment, including loading and unloading supplies.
• Operates a motor vehicle, such as a truck, or electric cart to transport custodial equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Maintains awareness of safety requirements and conducts all operations with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies. Maintains attendance records of safety meetings as required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may provide instructions to student assistants but does not have supervisory responsibilities.
