Position Summary The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment throughout SBCHC facilities to support patient care and daily operations. This role performs custodial services, light maintenance, and facility support duties with limited supervision. A strong custodian at SBCHC is reliable, proactive, and team-oriented, taking pride in their work and contributing to a welcoming and safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Sanitize, wash, and clean lavatories and restroom areas Sweep and wash staircases Remove trash daily before clinics open Vacuum all carpeted areas daily, both before clinic hours and during clinic operations Dry and damp mop tile floors daily; spray-buff tile floors weekly Clean glass doors, hand marks, soiled walls, windowsills, and ledges as needed Clean exterior areas around the health center, including parking lots, back lots, and building entrances daily Remove snow, sand, and salt from walkways to ensure safe passage as needed Perform light maintenance tasks such as small repairs, painting, furniture assembly, and moving furniture Safely store and maintain custodial equipment and supplies Follow written and verbal instructions and carry out tasks with limited supervision Demonstrate reliability, initiative, and a team-oriented spirit in daily work Comply with all organizational, state, and federal safety and sanitation regulations Participate in required trainings and staff meetings Perform other duties as assigned Requirements High school diploma or equivalent preferred Prior experience in custodial, facilities, or maintenance work preferred Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to work independently and take initiative while also functioning as part of a team Strong reliability, punctuality, and work ethic Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record Basic understanding of cleaning equipment and safe handling of supplies Preferred Qualifications Experience in a healthcare, community health, or similar setting Experience working in fast-paced or high-traffic environments Familiarity with safety, infection control, and sanitation standards Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism Customer service–oriented mindset Physical stamina and ability to perform repetitive tasks Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment Strong sense of responsibility and ownership of assigned areas Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the workday Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, if required Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation Schedule & Openings We currently have two (2) full-time Custodian openings with the following schedules: Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM Monday – Friday, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM Benefits & Perks SBCHC offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employee well-being and work-life balance, which may include: Medical, dental, and vision insurance Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Life insurance Retirement plan Paid time off (PTO), holidays, and sick time Tuition reimbursement and continuing education opportunities Employee assistance programs Other benefits in accordance with employment status and union agreements Compliance & Employment Requirements Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and reference checks Flu vaccine required COVID-19 vaccination series plus one (1) booster required, in accordance with SBCHC policy and applicable laws Selected candidates must meet all applicable licensing or employment eligibility requirements Equal Opportunity Statement South Boston Community Health Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace.
