Description The Custodian plays a vital role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all members, staff, and visitors. This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the facility during daytime hours, supporting high-traffic areas, and assisting with light maintenance tasks as needed. Requirements Facility Cleanliness & Upkeep Maintain cleanliness of all assigned areas, including lobbies, hallways, restrooms, locker rooms, program spaces, and offices. Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, wiping surfaces, and emptying trash. Restock supplies (paper products, soap, sanitizer, etc.) throughout the facility. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces regularly to support member safety and health standards. Member & Staff Support Provide friendly, helpful service to members and staff when assistance is needed. Respond promptly to cleaning requests, spills, or safety concerns. Communicate any facility issues, hazards, or repair needs to supervisor. Safety & Compliance Follow all YMCA cleaning protocols, safety procedures, and chemical handling guidelines. Ensure all equipment and supplies are used safely and stored properly. Support a clean and safe environment General Duties Assist with room setups/breakdowns for rentals and light maintenance tasks as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the facility. Qualifications One or more years of experience in custodial work or a closely related field preferred. Must meet all Association-wide training requirements. Must pass a Nationwide Criminal and Sex Offender Registry background screening. Must ensure that the physical and social environments reflect the Y’s character values and commitment to safety. Physical Demands The physical demands described here represent those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is often required to: Climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and reach with hands and arms Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods Climb ladders Shovel or clear snow and perform outdoor tasks as needed Lift and/or move up to 30 pounds Perform repetitive motions
