JOB SUMMARY:

  • Under the direction of the designated supervisor, participates in the direction and supervision of the overall branch service programme.
  • Supervises assistants and pages in the assigned areas of work. Takes responsibility for performing and/or coordinating more complex tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma from a Library Technicians course from a community college or similar institution or equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience
  • Understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of public service to all, in accordance with human rights legislation and the principles of equity and access in the delivery of library service
  • General knowledge of the organization, services and facilities of the library system
  • A sound, overall knowledge of the clerical activity, integrated library system and library procedures in the public services
  • Knowledge of basic reference techniques and ability to use routine reference sources
  • Proven ability to lead and to supervise staff
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement assignments
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative team relationships
  • Ability to relate well to patrons and to representatives of the local community
  • Accuracy and speed in keyboarding
  • Sufficient flexibility to move to other branches/divisions as required

Responsibilities
  • As a member of the supervisory team, shares responsibility for the day to day service to patrons, efficient operation and orderly appearance of the branch
  • Suggests new or improved work routines
  • Identifies work requirements, assigns tasks and coordinates the work of clerical and Page staff to ensure that procedures are carried out as specified
  • Assists in training clerical staff. Selects and trains Page staff as delegated
  • Prepares schedules and time and attendance reports as required
  • Provides verbal input to performance appraisals of staff
  • Compiles data for statistical reports
  • In the absence of the designated supervisor, takes responsibility for the branch
  • Assists patrons in the use of library materials
  • Supervises the work of junior staff and liaises with other branches or departments as necessary
  • Plans and conducts programs suitable for people of different ages and cultural backgrounds
  • Assists in maintaining up-to-date and orderly materials collection
  • Selects materials for outreach services as required and performs related clerical duties
  • Visits institutions to provide outreach service when necessary
  • Assists in developing a community liaison
  • Participates in the performance of general clerical routines, such as desk duty, filing and keyboarding
  • Performs other related duties as required
