Job Summary
The Customs and Trade Senior Specialist supports and is responsible for all customs related operations with import, export, and other trade/customs laws, rules, and regulation within US, CA, and MX. The Hillman Group is a growing and fast-paced company with multiple locations across North America. This role serves as a subject matter expert for Trade Operations for our divisions and brands. This role will work with cross-functional teams at multiple locations to support customs & trade and compliance initiatives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS *
- Complete classifications for new and existing products for North America. Ensure compliance with all import/export regulations (Classification, Valuation, Country of Origin, ADD/CVD, Country of Melt and Pour (Steel) and Country of Smelt and Cast (Aluminum)
- Update and maintain a classification database that includes a rationale for each classification in accordance with the General Rules of Interpretation (US &Canada), and communicate any changes in classifications to the Customs & Trade Manager, Customs Broker (PSC/Disclosure), and Data Management
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Steel/Alum Tariffs (SEC232), and Reciprocal Tariffs – stay up to date with ongoing changes
- Promptly handle requests from the Customs Broker to prevent delays at time of entry, audit US & Canada entry files for accuracy and ensure entry records are being stored in accordance with US & Canada Customs Regulations
- Understand the impact of ADD/CVD in the US and SIMA in Canada, complete Country of Origin and USMCA requests, provide support for requests from government bodies such as CBP, CBSA, and Department of Commerce
- Validate the Country of Origin for goods being exported, maintain records of export documents, assist in the Aviso and UVA process in Mexico
- Work with internal teams in identifying new procedures and methods to expedite the import/export laws, regulations, administrative practices, and supply chain security
- Develop a process for denied party screening for all Hillman customers and vendors, drive continuous improvement within the import/export process to reduce cost and entry time, and monitor and report on developments related to customs and trade compliance
- Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, and a driven problem-solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks promptly
- Provides support on additional assignments to ensure overall success of the team and company

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 7 plus years’ relevant work experience in customs and trade/brokerage
- LCB Preferred
- CCS Preferred
COMPETENCIES – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Background in the fastener industry is preferred, but not required
- Proficiency with MS Excel and data management, ability to process large data sets, identify abnormalities, challenges, or areas of attention
- Ability to function both in a team and individual setting with the ability to shift priorities as required
