Description

ABOUT METABOLIC INSTITUTE

Metabolic’s mission is to transition the global economy to a fundamentally sustainable state. Metabolic Institute is a non-profit think tank, working at the intersection of academic research and real-world experimentation. The think tank advances open-source knowledge on global sustainability issues, by prototyping how society can thrive while remaining safely within planetary boundaries. Combining systems thinking, data science, and the latest analytical tools from academia, we map and understand local and global systems to assess where to intervene for the largest positive impact. Our work covers two main domains: 1) urban transitions and 2) the bioeconomy. We are a small international and dynamic team who share an ambition for catalyzing a sustainable future.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead data analysis work stream in research projects, conducting in-depth data analysis and interpreting results to provide actionable insights
  • Help developing and refining new methodologies for modelling systems and intervention strategies
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and researchers to ensure that research outcomes are robust, practical, and applicable.
  • Support strategies to make sure data, methods, and tools we develop create systemic impact and have a far reach

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master-level degree (or equivalent level of professional experience) in one of the following domains (or similar): Computer Sciences, Data Science, Environmental Sciences, Geo-information Science, Environmental Management, Earth systems science, Agricultural Science, Artificial Intelligence.
  • 2-3 years of post-master professional experience in data analysis in the context of research or consulting projects.
  • A strong level of experience and skills for data analysis is needed for this role. Programming expertise (Python and/or R) and advanced spreadsheet skills are hard requirements. This role will require working with spatial, material flow, and environmental data, so the ideal candidate will have experience with GIS, LCA, MFA, statistical, and IO/trade data and approaches, though gaps can be filled with learning.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Well-organized, reliable, and proactive, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple research tasks and workflows independently.
  • Experience with topics related to sustainability, agriculture, forestry, carbon quantification, nature-based solutions, or other related fields.
  • Experience working with European research consortia or international research projects is a big plus.
  • For non-EU/EEA applicants: The role is dependent upon possessing or obtaining a visa to live and work in the Netherlands.
