Description

Are you passionate about stopping pollution and fighting for climate justice? Do you want to research solutions to limit harm to communities most impacted by extractive industries? If so, this position may be right for you.
We seek a passionate and detail-oriented Data Analyst to support our work monitoring and combating pollution from oil and gas operations. This role will involve collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data related to emissions, spills, health impacts, regulatory compliance, and environmental justice. Reporting to Earthworks’ Senior Manager for Research, Policy, and Data and working in close collaboration with Earthworks’ Energy, Policy, and Communications teams, this person will help create credible and compelling information about the health and climate impacts of oil and gas development. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills with a commitment to environmental and social justice.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Environmental Science, Public Health, Statistics, Geography, Sociology, or a related field and 3-5 years of experience in data analysis preferably with a focus on environmental, public health, or energy topics OR Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Environmental Science, Public Health, Statistics, Geography, Sociology, or a related field and at least 5 years of experience in data analysis preferably with a focus on environmental, public health, or energy topics
  • GIS certificate OR completion of all coursework required for certification. If not certified, certification is required within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Proficiency with relational database management systems.
  • Proficiency with Python, R, or other statistical tools.
  • Proficiency with data visualization tools (e.g., GIS platforms, Tableau, Power BI).
  • Strong skills in data wrangling, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and personal accountability.
  • Strong writing, editing, and oral communication skills tailored for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across teams and organizations.
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and effective prioritization within a multi-project workspace and dynamic political landscape.
  • Commitment to environmental justice, anti-racism, and intersectional advocacy principles.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with oil & gas industry data (e.g., emissions inventories, permitting databases, FracFocus, EPA FLIGHT, etc.).
  • Understanding of relevant environmental regulations.
  • Experience working with spatial data and satellite imagery.
  • Experience working with frontline communities or in community-engaged research.
  • Experience translating technical research into advocacy-driven messaging.
  • Experience working in a fully remote setting.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, organize, and analyze internal and external datasets related to oil and gas pollution (e.g., emissions, chemicals, air and water quality, health statistics).
  • Develop dashboards, maps, and visualizations to communicate data findings to diverse audiences, including policymakers, regulatory agencies, media, and the public.
  • Support integration of optical gas imaging (OGI) and aerial data in our buildout, migration, and future use of ArcGIS.
  • Monitor and evaluate international, federal, state, and industry data sources (e.g. EPA, EIA, state regulators, etc.) for trends and violations.
  • Clean and standardize complex datasets, perform qualitative, quantitative, geospatial, and temporal analyses, and identify anomalies.
  • Work with Energy, Policy, and Communications staff to support investigations and campaigns using data-driven insights.
  • Provide training opportunities for staff and partners on use of the ESRI suite of tools and utilization of aerial data.
  • Work with the Communications team to translate satellite data and findings, building effective communication strategies for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with scientists, organizers, and community partners to build working relationships and co-create data tools, fact sheets, and reports.
  • Stay current with environmental data science tools, methodologies, and regulatory developments.
