Lead Data Engineer

📍 Remote (UK-based only)
💰 £660/day, inside IR35, PAYE via umbrella
📄 BPSS clearance required

Shape the data behind a national fee and payments system. We're looking for a Lead Data Engineer to take ownership of the numerical models and data strategy powering a public sector fees and payments programme.

The role

You'll lead the development, quality assurance, and operation of the R-based models used to calculate key fees and payments — models that need to be robust, transparent, and trusted by both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You'll also shape the wider data strategy: identifying what data is needed, how it's gathered, and how it's maintained across teams.

What you'll be doing

Building and maintaining reproducible, well-tested R models and pipelines
Leading data strategy — sourcing, maintaining, and aligning key datasets across teams
Managing access to a data reporting portal and building tools to extract and analyse data
Communicating complex analysis clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Representing the team in industry-facing and cross-organisational settings

What you'll bring

Advanced R skills: dplyr, data.table, statistical modelling, simulation
Experience building reproducible analytical pipelines with automated testing
Solid Git/GitHub workflow experience
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Leadership experience — whether managing a team or coordinating delivery
