DATA ENGINEER (JUNIOR)

Position Summary: The Junior Data Engineer will support database design, development, integration, and performance optimization efforts. This role will assist in building and maintaining ETL pipelines, supporting database migrations, and ensuring data quality in a cloud-first environment.
Place of Performance: Washington DC (Remote work may also occur with written permission of the STB)
Security Clearance Requirement: Required to have a completed, favorably adjudicated background investigation at the Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) level prior to accessing STB systems. Personnel must be able to maintain the required level of clearance (Moderate Risk) while supporting the Board on this effort.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-3 years of experience with SQL development and database fundamentals
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and SQL Server (required for this role)
  • Basic understanding of database design principles, normalization, and data modeling concepts
  • Experience writing stored procedures, functions, and triggers
  • Familiarity with database performance concepts like indexing and query optimization
  • Experience building ETL processes and data pipelines using tools like Python, SQL, or ETL platforms (Glue, Step Functions, Lambda)
  • Understanding of data integration patterns and best practices Familiarity with data transformation and validation techniques
  • Experience with AWS services, particularly RDS and EC2 for database hosting, and Glue, Step Functions, and Lambda for ETL functions
  • Amazon Redshift experience preferred for data warehousing workloads
  • Understanding of cloud database deployment and management concepts
  • Basic knowledge of Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD principles
    Basic knowledge of data management concepts and data cataloging tools and processes.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with database schema design and data modeling
  • Develop stored procedures, functions, triggers, and database objects
  • Build data integration solutions including ETL processes and data pipelines
  • Implement database automation tools and CI/CD processes for database and data pipeline deployments
  • Create and optimize database APIs and data access layers
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for database solutions
  • Monitor integration performance and Assist DBA with query optimization
  • Implement indexing strategies and partitioning under supervision
  • Support performance testing and analysis efforts
  • Help develop monitoring dashboards and reporting solutions
  • Support database migration and upgrade projects
  • Assist with data quality validation and testing processes
  • Help implement data archiving and retention procedures
  • Support backup and recovery testing activities
  • Support data cataloging and metadata documentation efforts
  • Participate in database testing and validation activities for new features or changes
  • Support data relevant documentation and knowledge management activities and implement database security controls following established policies
  • Assist with FISMA compliance documentation and audit preparation
  • Support data masking and encryption implementation and help maintain security monitoring processes
  • Work with cloud database platforms, primarily RedShift, SQL Server and PostgreSQL on RDS but may include others, and SQL Server and PostgreSQL on EC2 instances
  • Support database automation and CI/CD implementation and collaborate with development teams on database best practices
