Your own experience, your judgement, the systems you have worked with and the problems you have personally solved. Please do not submit generic AI-generated statements, invented experience or technical claims you could not confidently explain yourself. Applications that appear generic, fabricated or cannot be substantiated will not progress.Shortlisted candidates should expect a practical assessment and in-person interview. We are interested in how you use AI as a tool, but your application still needs to be authentically yours.NHS Grampian is an intelligence-led organisation using data and analytics across clinical, operational, public health and corporate services. We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Data Engineer to join our Health Intelligence team and help build the next generation of NHS Grampian's data services. We are developing a new enterprise data platform around Microsoft Fabric, OneLake and Power BI, while moving away from our existing on-premise and Tableau estate. The successful candidate will help shape and build that environment, including data pipelines, lakehouse and warehouse structures, reusable data models and semantic layers, governance, security and the migration from Tableau to Power BI.SQL and Python are useful, but we are particularly interested in someone who understands how modern data platforms fit together and can design reliable, scalable and maintainable data services. What you will doHelp design and build NHS Grampian's Microsoft Fabric data estate
  • Develop and improve data ingestion, transformation and ELT pipelines
  • Build lakehouse, warehouse and reusable data models
  • Support the migration from Tableau to Power BI
  • Develop trusted semantic models and reusable data products
  • Integrate data from clinical, operational and corporate systems
  • Improve automation, testing, deployment, monitoring and documentation
  • Help embed good approaches to governance, lineage, security and access control
  • Work with analysts, clinicians and service leaders to turn real problems into practical data solutions

About youWe are looking for someone who can self-lead and take technical ownership. You should be comfortable taking a problem, understanding what is needed, working out a sensible approach and taking it through to delivery without needing every step mapped out for you.Experience in some of the following would be useful:

  • Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Databricks, Snowflake or similar platforms
  • Power BI and semantic modelling
  • Data engineering and ELT
  • Lakehouse or data warehouse architecture
  • Dimensional modelling
  • SQL and Python
  • APIs and system integration
  • Version control, testing and CI/CD
  • Data governance, security and privacy
  • Whilst desirable, you do not need NHS experience and you do not need to tick every box. We would much rather find someone who understands data engineering, learns quickly, thinks independently and wants to help us build something substantial. What we offerA genuine opportunity to help shape a major new NHS data platform
  • Flexible and hybrid working
  • Strong support for professional development and research
  • Close links with the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Centre for Health Data Science
  • Work with a broad range of health data that directly supports patient care, services and population health
