SYNCRONYS is the state of New Mexico’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) and is a local not for profit health information organization. The ideal candidate for this position has experience as part of the IT Team working with various internal and vendor teams to manage product roadmaps for development, improvement, and integration of new solutions and features over the lifecycle of its solutions.
The Data Engineer will play a key role in designing, building, consolidating and optimizing data pipelines and architecture to support data quality, reporting, and analytics initiatives for internal and external customers, HEDIS/NCQA metrics extracts, and public health and syndromic surveillance programs. This role will collaborate closely with IT team, data analysts, informatics specialists, HIE vendors and healthcare clients to ensure high-quality, timely, and actionable data flows through our Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in data engineering and a solid understanding of healthcare data standards, data quality metrics, and public health reporting requirements.
Performs various technical and analytical activities in connection with relational database management as applied to health care, primarily consisting of extract/transfer/load (ETL) development and maintenance, database administration (DBA) activities and utilization of advanced database querying skills for analytical purposes.
This position is eligible for remote work under the SYNCRONYS Remote Work Policy.

COMPETENCY, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Advanced ETL development, programming languages (Phyton, SQL development skills) hands on experience with data pipeline tools and maintenance capabilities, preferably w/SSIS.
  2. Demonstrated ability to perform other database administrations tasks such as query performance tuning, security, backups and maintenance and SQL Agent configuration.
  3. Ability to perform advanced data queries and support data integration/ETL processes related thereto.
  4. Understanding of HEDIS technical specifications, NCQA reporting standards and public health syndromic surveillance reporting requirements.
  5. Familiarity with modern data architecture (e.g., cloud-based data lakes, real-time streaming, APIs) and healthcare data formats and vocabularies (HL7, CDA, FHIR, X12 ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm).
  6. Strong problem solving, cross-collaboration and communication skills.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or related field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of five years of experience in ETL, advanced database querying, maintenance, and reporting systems.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in data engineering or similar role, with a strong focus on healthcare data integration and analytics.
  • Familiarity with HEDIS engine platforms or NCQA-certified metrics.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Health Informatics, Data Science, or Public Health.
  • Experience working in or with a Health Information Exchange (HIE) or public health agency.
  • Windows/Linux scripting and/or demonstrating increasing proficiency is desirable.
  • Experience in public health, health services, or related field (or equivalent experience) preferred.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS or equivalent) and healthcare APIs (e.g., FHIR-based interoperability).
  • Knowledge of data governance, data testing/validation and data stewardship frameworks (e.g. PIQI).

    Pay: $86,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
