DATA ENGINEER

TeleGeography
Washington, D.C. / Remote
TeleGeography, a specialty market research firm that produces authoritative, data-driven
analysis of the global telecommunications industry, is expanding its Data Team with a Data
Engineer position. The Data Engineer will be involved in the design and maintenance of
TeleGeography’s proprietary databases, migration of disparate data sources to a centralized
data platform, design and maintenance of data processing and pipelining codebase, and
development of new analytics for custom consulting projects.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, data analytics, mathematics,

economics, engineering, or some other related technical discipline

  • Knowledge of relational database principles and architecture
  • Proficiency in SQL, and in at least one scripting language (Python, Ruby, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn other coding languages or software, as needed
  • Experience using version control systems (e.g., Git) in a team development environment
  • Ability to take responsibility for key portions of a project and develop towards a given

goal independently, while calling on additional support from the team when needed

  • Professional communication skills, to correspond about complex topics with both

technical and non-technical audiences

  • Analytical skills to understand the aims of the research and analyst teams, and how

those needs can be met utilizing our existing datasets

  • Ability to take key requirements from an internal or external client, and propose a

technical solution

  • High degree of intellectual curiosity

Bonus Qualifications Master’s degree in a technical discipline, and/or professional industry experience in data

analysis/engineering

  • Familiarity with HTML, Javascript, and web frameworks
  • Experience working with cloud-based storage and database platforms (AWS, Google

Cloud Platform, Azure)

  • Development experience working with (or building) RESTful APIs
  • Background or interest in telecommunications, maps, and international economies and

cultures

Responsibilities
  • Maintain existing TeleGeography databases and data pipeline, and expand upon our

existing data management codebase

  • Assist with migration of data from various systems into a modern, centralized data store

to be leveraged more effectively across the company

  • Develop and maintain cloud ecosystem resources to support application infrastructure,

data processing, and pipelines

  • Process, normalize, validate, and load new data and intelligence procured by our analyst

team from a wide variety of sources, and produce regular analytics from those data

streams

  • Work with analyst teams to identify areas for process improvement, through automation

or other new tools

  • Troubleshoot data errors and provide recommendations to improve data integrity
  • Expand the capacity of the Data Team to take on increasingly technical outside

consulting, as well as internal and external application design
