Data Engineer

The Data Engineer will oversee Working America’s data integration work, including managing a data warehouse and analytics environment, developing data models, and writing scripts for data integration and analysis. This role will work closely and collaboratively with members of the Data and Technology department and with internal customer departments to define requirements, integrate data from a variety of sources, and develop ETL processes in support of Working America’s operational and analytics needs.
Through pipeline development, operations, and maintenance , the Data Engineer will enable Working America to implement more efficient and effective campaigns.
Reports to: IT Manager of Data & Cloud Services

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, and maintain stable, secure, and scalable data engineering solutions and pipelines in support of data and analytics projects, including integrating new sources and destinations of data;
  • Collaborate with Working America peers and stakeholders,and vendors to identify and assess availability, reliability, scalability and security of new technologies and tools;
  • Produce scalable, replicable code and engineering solutions that help automate repetitive data management tasks;
  • Perform one-off data manipulation/munging and analysis on a wide variety of data;
  • Implement and monitor best-in-class security measures in our data warehouse and analytics environment, with an eye towards the evolving threat landscape;
  • Write and update technical documentation for collaboration and knowledge sharing with team members;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • STEM-related Bachelor’s degree preferred, Engineering degree strongly preferred;
  • 3-5 years of related work experience in data engineering or architecture required;
  • Experience managing large-scale and complex data systems and infrastructures, pipelines, and data sets required;
  • Strong command of relational databases and SQL; Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) data into a relational database required;
  • Experience working with cloud infrastructure technologies. Google Cloud is preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience with Airbyte, Airflow, DataFusion, Rudderstack, AWS Data Pipeline, Dataflow or similar required;
  • 2-3 years of experience working with structured and unstructured data sources to include API endpoints, CSVs, text files, databases, and webhooks;
  • 2-3 years of Python strongly preferred;
  • Proficiency with GitHub;
  • Demonstrable experience working in fast-paced and complex work environments both onsite and remote;
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams, in both a lead and support role;
  • Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, and make recommendations in resolving problems;
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion; and
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours as necessary.

  • FLSA Classification: Exempt

The Step 1 salary is $110,684 with additional steps considered for candidates with experience and qualifications beyond what is required above. Includes medical insurance, paid time off, and 401(k) with employer contribution.
The position is a bargaining unit position, represented by the Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild, TNG-CWA, Local 32035.
