ABOUT THE ROLE

In an ever-evolving landscape of data, it’s important that we understand, cleanse and use our data to ensure its quality, integrity and veracity. Data is one of our greatest assets and the role of data governance and data quality is fundamental in helping shape the future of our business. To support our data management vision, we are looking for someone join our newly created Data Excellence team to lead the implementation of data governance principles for important data domains across the business.
This is one of three roles to report to the Head of Data Excellence in the Data Office. You will work cross functionally, to deliver a step change in data governance and data quality across the organisation. This is a rewarding role, with good exposure to many senior stakeholders across numerous departments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish hierarchies and lead the implementation of a business-wide Data Governance framework for your main data domains, with clear timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Engage with Data Owners, Data Custodians and Data Stewards to ensure they are onboarded to the Data Governance programme, adequately trained, and supported to meet data governance requirements to improve data quality in their department.
  • Support the personal development of the Data Governance Specialist roles through clear direction, training and feedback.
  • Log and monitor data incidents and issues and work with Data Stewards on root cause analysis and remediation activities.
  • Maintain the centralised data inventory to ensure the business rules, standards and procedures for your department are up to date.
  • Be the main consult and initial reviewer of all data assessments for your departments, ensuring the business is compliant with all WBA and regulatory standards, policies and procedures.
  • Be the subject matter expert and main contact for new and existing business areas/projects that use your data domains, advising on data management and compliance, driving the importance, agreement and cultural change to treat data as a business-wide asset.
  • Lead the agenda at Data Governance Forums to ensure data quality Measurements are set and monitored, data lineage is mapped and backlogs are prioritised to fix data issues.
  • Provide and implement recommendations following data analysis that highlights risks, issues or trends in data quality.
  • Be an advocate in everything you do and inspire and coach others, with your knowledge and experience with all things relating to data.

These are the essential skills or experience needed to succeed in this role.

  • You’ll have a background in data governance, preferably certified (or willing to become so e.g. DAMA, CDMP, EDM Council), and knowledge and exposure of data protection, audit and policy principles.
  • You will have experience working in a Omni-channel environment with the ability to see the bigger picture, get to the heart of the problem and to lead the right decisions at pace.
  • You will be able to build and maintain collaborative relationships across the business and IT.
  • You will be able to explain complex data issues to technical and non-technical partners.
  • Experience working within a retail business environment would be an advantage
