BusinessDesk, New Zealand’s leading business and political economy news service, is looking for a data-savvy journalist to join our dynamic newsroom. Auckland or Wellington based preferred. What you will do: BusinessDesk is New Zealand’s mostcomprehensive business and political economy news service. Using data to scrutinize company performanceand interrogate government spending is essential to our offering. We are looking for a data-savvy journalist toexpand our team. This role involves generating your own ideasand working with BusinessDesk reporters on team stories. You will find new ways of presenting andreporting on data to engage audiences and tell stories that meet internationalbest practice – and provide a benchmark that other newsrooms around the worldseek to emulate. How you will do it: You will use data to break stories which movemarkets and are of national significance. This role involves sourcing and collatinglarge datasets to help tell stories, including using raw financial data such asannual reports, government budgets or other datasets such as property recordsor electoral role data. The core of this role involves either theexisting ability or the ability to quickly learn to read and become confidentwith basic financial analysis of companies’ earnings reports, strategicupdates, and major announcements. You will also become familiar with economicdata and government budget appropriations. Planning and organisational skills: Ability to take guidance and instruction/havestories assigned to you Ability to work well independently, and workwith other newsroom staff on team projects. Technical skills: Report and write stories and features with adata focus using tools such as Datawrapper and Flourish Develop the skills to acquire, analyse andpresent data. Learn programming systems such as R and JavaScript. Develop data interactives and visualisations. Responsibilities
