The Data Science Centre, launched in February 2022 to promote cutting-edge research and services in Data Science across all of EMBL, is looking for a bioinformatician, computational biologist or computer scientist as a Data Management Coordinator. The Data Science Centre will ensure that biological research data at our multi-site organisation are expertly processed, integrated, annotated, and openly managed to support and foster EMBL’s missions.

Your role
In your role as a Data Management Coordinator, you will harmonise efforts in large-scale integrated biological data management across EMBL’s international sites, involving diverse data types such as genomic, imaging and structural biology data. The tasks include coordination of the implementation of standardised high-throughput data processing frameworks using workflow languages and containerized software in HPC and cloud computing environments. The role will involve close cooperation and identification of synergies with other partners within EMBL’s international sites, including with the EMBL IT services. You will also identify and address technical issues in supporting the needs of large-scale data generation and collection activities and contribute to the development and implementation of data science tools to enable these activities. As the Data management coordinator, reporting to the Head of Data Science of the EMBL, you will represent the EMBL Data Science Centre at national and international levels as appropriate, and participate in international networks and activities.

Responsibilities include:

• Coordinate tasks of the Data Science Centre pertaining to data management, which includes strategic planning.
• Define best practices for data coordination and management and inform the development of the required technical infrastructure to support integrated and open data management, in coordination with EMBL’s IT services.
• Define technical issues in supporting the needs of different data collection projects and contribute to the development of tools to enable project specific workflows.
• Implement and monitor pipeline management frameworks for HPC and cloud environments.
• Define best practices and supporting data/software management plans based on FAIR principles, together with the EMBL’s IT services.
• Provide consultation and review services for the creation of data management plans across the organisation.
• Improve bioinformatics workflows with respect to performance, robustness and reusability.
• Direct supervision of staff (appr. 3-5) including at other EMBL sites.
• Communicate the Centre’s work internally and to researchers in the field.
• Coordination of public data services management at EMBL-HD.
• Manage reporting and dissemination of work to funders and assist with development of new collaborations and grants.
• Develop and deliver data management training in collaboration with internal training programmes.

You have

• You should hold a higher degree (e.g., MSc or PhD) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biology or Computer Science.
• Ideally you will have post-doctoral or equivalent experience in a bioinformatics service environment.
• Familiarity with Perl/Python/Java/C++, workflow languages, and data manipulation in a bioinformatics environment are required.
• Experience with software containerization tools like Docker, Singularity, and with workflow management tools like CWL, Nextflow, and Snakemake is desired.
• Expertise in software development and cloud computing technologies e.g. S3 storage, Kubernetes will be beneficial.
• Familiarity with biological data management and FAIR principles would be a strong plus.
• You should be comfortable organising and delivering training to audiences large and small.

Salary: Grade 7 or 8, depending on individual experiences and qualification monthly basic salary from 5,100 EUR (after tax and before 12.05% EMBL social security deductions) and plus other paid benefits
