The Data Platform Engineer will be instrumental in our data transformation journey managing and evolving our data infrastructure. This is a hands-on SQL Server operations role, owning the day-to-day reliability of on-prem SQL Server environments while helping evaluate and guide the organizations transition toward cloud-based data services that better support the business. This role bridges the gap between traditional database administration and modern data engineering. It requires strong SQL skills, a proactive mindset, and an interest in learning modern data and cloud technologies over time. While data platforms are your primary focus, this role also contributes to broader IT initiatives typical of a small, growing team. Please note: This position is remote. The successful candidate must be able to periodically commute to one of our facilities in Riverton, Utah; Sacramento, California; or Renton, Washington. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: SQL Server Operations and Data Platform Reliability (50%) Own the day-to-day operation, reliability, and performance of on-premises SQL Server environments Perform administration tasks including monitoring, patching, backup/recovery (BCDR), security, and lifecycle management Conduct performance tuning and optimization, proactively identifying risks and improvement opportunities Develop and maintain automation scripts and tooling for routine operations and monitoring Troubleshoot issues across database, operating system, and application layers Data Platform Evolution & Cloud Readiness (30%) Assess current-state data platforms and recommend practical, phased approaches for introducing cloud-based data services (such as Azure SQL, Databricks, or similar technologies) when they provide clear business value Contribute to cloud enablement and data platform strategy Support migration and modernization initiatives as appropriate Evaluate emerging data and analytics technologies and recommend fit-for-purpose solutions Cross-Functional Data, Business Support & IT Collaboration (20%) Collaborate with business teams to understand data requirements, reporting needs, and usage patterns that inform platform design and optimization. Improve how data is modeled, accessed, and consumed across the organization, enabling more efficient analytics and operational workflows. Contribute to broader IT initiatives including infrastructure, automation, documentation, and process improvements typical of a small, collaborative IT team. Participate in solution reviews, architectural discussions, and implementation planning to support high-quality technical decision-making. Education, Experience and Training (Knowledge): Bachelor’s Degree/Bachelor’s Seeking with Technical Competencies and 3 years of industry experience OR 5 years of industry experience Skills and abilities: Strong experience in Microsoft SQL Server (design, operations, optimization, and administration. Strong troubleshooting skills across database, OS and application layers Familiarity with cloud data platforms (such as Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, Databricks, or similar technologies), with the ability to evaluate, learn, and recommend appropriate cloud options as the platform evolves Proficient with scripting languages, such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash Understanding of data governance, access control, security frameworks, and compliance requirements in cloud environments Comfortable working independently while collaborating closely within a small, evolving environment and team Experience creating and following change control processes; familiarity with ITIL Experience in supporting infrastructure in regulated environments Experience working in a manufacturing environment is highly desirable Certificates and Licenses: Relevant Microsoft or cloud certifications (Azure Data Engineer, SQL Server, or Fabric) We take pride in fostering a positive work-life balanced environment.
