Pay rate: £35.00 per hour PAYE
Contract Type: Temporary, Anticipated 3 to 4 months
Working Arrangement: Hybrid office attendance twice a month

THE ROLE:

On behalf of a local council, we are seeking an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO) and take the lead in ensuring compliance with data protection legislation, information governance best practice, and transparency requirements.
The successful candidate will play a key role in safeguarding the personal data of our residents, service users, and employees. You will act as the council’s expert adviser on data protection and information rights, supporting senior leaders and colleagues across all departments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as the Council’s designated Data Protection Officer under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Provide expert advice on compliance with data protection legislation, ensuring robust policies and procedures are in place.
  • Lead on the management and response to data breaches, including notification to the ICO and affected individuals when required.
  • Oversee and support the implementation of Freedom of Information (FOI) case management systems and policies, ensuring statutory timescales are met.
  • Deliver training, awareness sessions, and guidance to staff and elected members to strengthen the Council’s information governance culture.
  • Monitor, audit, and report on data protection compliance, producing regular updates for senior management and committees.
  • Work collaboratively with IT, Legal, HR, and service teams to embed privacy by design and data protection impact assessments into council activities.
