Description

Job Description:
Torch Technologies is seeking a highly analytical and mathematically mature Apprentice Data Scientist/Machine Learning Engineer to join our growing AI/ML team supporting advanced missile simulation, test planning, and defense system optimization. This role offers a unique opportunity to learn directly under a lead mathematician and AI engineer working at the intersection of machine learning, system modeling, and formal analysis. Candidates will focus on understanding data structures, modeling assumptions, and building explainable and reliable AI systems for complex environments. Ideal applicants are rigorous thinkers who approach problems with precision and creativity, using mathematics, machine learning, and statistical methods.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mathematics; other degrees such as Computer Science, Physics, or Philosophy (logic-focused) considered if demonstrating strong analytical depth.
  • 5+ year related years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
  • Strong grasp of logic, proof techniques, and mathematical abstraction.
  • Basic proficiency in Python and a strong interest in machine learning and data analysis workflows.
  • Willingness to learn ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Ability to think clearly about system design, modeling assumptions, and data dependencies.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity, long-form problem solving, and independent technical research.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of expressing complex technical ideas precisely in writing and speech.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience working with structured data, scientific computing, physics engines, or symbolic systems.
  • Interest in explainable AI, interpretable modeling, or low-level model debugging techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-teach advanced topics and synthesize ideas from diverse fields.
  • Passion for rigorous thinking and solving complex, real-world problems.
  • Experience creating user-friendly reports using databases, programs, and custom scripts.
U.S. Citizenship Required for this Position: Yes
    Job Type: Regular Full-time

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the lead engineer to develop and analyze machine learning models for simulation, planning, and optimization.
  • Investigate model behavior, identify failure modes, and propose theoretically grounded improvements.
  • Develop and apply modeling and measuring techniques using mathematical, statistical, and machine learning methods.
  • Creatively explore and manipulate large, structured, and unstructured datasets to discover multiple solution pathways.
  • Write clean, well-documented Python code to support training pipelines, model evaluation, and analysis tools.
  • Read and interpret academic papers and formal specifications, reproducing results as necessary.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure integration and connectivity across databases and systems.
  • Communicate findings through clear, user-friendly reports and creative storytelling that is broadly understandable.
  • Think critically about system structure, data dependencies, and modeling assumptions.
