QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Superb data visualization and design skills, coupled with demonstrated experience interpreting and displaying business concepts through powerful visuals
  • Proven experience working directly with data graphics in an Editorial department or editorial context
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Strong PowerPoint skills
  • Experience with Flourish, Infogram, Figma and other third-party data visualization tools a strong plus
  • Experience with Optimizely (Episerver) CMS platform is a plus
  • Experience with Javascript, HTML, CSS, and JS visualization libraries such as D3 is a strong plus
  • Proven experience recruiting, maintaining and managing a stable of freelance designers
  • Experience with Tableau, Alteryx and other data visualization tools is a plus
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and manage multiple projects with evolving requirements
  • Solid experience and understanding of corporate branding, layout, color and typography, preferably in both print and digital media. Experience with traditional print media is a plus
  • Self-starter with strong customer service, teamwork and organizational skills
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively in cross-functional teams
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with a concentration in math or statistics, data visualization, graphic design or other relevant studies
  • MA or MBA preferred but not required
Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Bain’s Practice Editors help our Partners distill and refine their business insights and analysis for publication. The Data Visualization Editor plays a similar role, working with Partners and the Practice Editors to distill and publish key messages via data visualization.
  • Serve as an internal consultant to Bain’s Practice Editors as they work with Bain’s Partners to publish Bain’s thought leadership insights in all formats:
  • Sit in on calls between Practice Editors and Partners to provide data visualization guidance
  • Reimagine data visualizations provided by the practices (typically in PowerPoint) to create compelling data graphics
  • Suggest new data visualization opportunities based on a close reading of the content and the data set provided
  • Conceive, develop and produce charts, infographics, interactives, “scrollytelling”, and other data-led online imagery.
  • Review and manage the data visualization work of Editorial and Brand Design team members and provide feedback on clarity, user experience, mobile display, load times, production efficiency, and reusability across formats (e.g., social, digital mailings, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the Production Editors, help manage the choice of data visualization tools and approach to optimize production flow of data visualizations and interactives, balancing project complexity against deadlines and resource availability.
  • Review data visualizations to ensure their graphic approach to quantitative information is accurate, intuitive, and on-brand. The Data Visualization Editor should be skilled at effectively communicating which approaches work best, which don’t and why.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest data visualization tools used by Bain’s consulting teams; devote time to learning how these tools are used with clients and how they can be used in Bain’s various publications.
  • Develop, document, and advocate for Bain’s approaches to published data visualization, including user interface, common features (e.g., standard buttons and UX), label usage and position, etc.
  • Learn, understand, and advocate for the Bain brand and all design requirements associated with the brand.
  • Develop and maintain a stable of talented freelance data visualization producers.
