DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (DBA)

Position Summary: The Database Administrator will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and security of STB’s enterprise database systems hosted primarily in AWS (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Redshift). This role ensures high availability, performance, compliance, and support for application and business teams.
Place of Performance: Washington DC (Remote work may also occur with written permission of the STB)
Security Clearance Requirement: Required to have a completed, favorably adjudicated background investigation at the Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) level prior to accessing STB systems. Personnel must be able to maintain the required level of clearance (Moderate Risk) while supporting the Board on this effort.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5+ years hands-on experience with major database platforms (SQL Server, PostgreSQL) in an AWS cloud environment
  • Proficiency in SQL, database tuning, and performance optimization techniques
  • Experience with backup/recovery procedures, high availability configurations, and disaster recovery planning
  • Knowledge of database monitoring tools and performance analysis
  • Familiarity with scheduling and job management in database environments
  • Understanding of database security principles, encryption methods, and access control frameworks
  • FISMA compliance experience or familiarity with federal security standards
  • Knowledge of vulnerability assessment tools and remediation processes
  • Experience with audit preparation and security documentation
  • Experience supporting application development teams and troubleshooting database issues
  • Background in change management processes and documentation standards
  • Incident response experience with vendor coordination capabilities

Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled maintenance including backups, patches, updates, and performance optimization
  • Monitor database performance, resolve bottlenecks, and automate routine tasks using scripts
  • Maintain database documentation and participate in change management processes
  • Conduct regular data integrity checks and basic capacity planning
  • Implement database security policies, manage user access controls, and conduct vulnerability assessments
  • Maintain FISMA compliance including but not limited to encryption, access logging, and audit trails
  • Support security audits by providing documentation, reports, and remediation of findings
  • Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and organizational standards
  • Design, implement, and test backup/recovery procedures with documented RTO/RPO objectives
  • Provide incident response and coordinate with vendors during database issues
  • Support application teams with database troubleshooting and optimization
  • Support end user access to databases by managing group permissions and promptly troubleshooting user access issues
