The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Division of Humanities invites applications for the position of Dean, College of Education. The University of Otago College of Education is dedicated to the enhancement of educational practice through high quality teaching, scholarship, research, professional leadership, and community service, to benefit learners, educators, and the wider community (in local, national and international settings). This position provides an excellent opportunity for an internationally-respected senior academic to take on the leadership of the University of Otago’s College of Education. The College has a strong focus on providing excellence and leadership in research and teaching across a range of Initial Teacher Education and Education Studies programmes, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Role/Te mahi The Dean provides leadership in a collaborative academic environment, advancing the College’s commitment to excellence in research-led teaching and enriching student experience. As a member of the Division's leadership team, the Dean also contributes to the Division’s strategy and to the wider University. It is expected that the appointment will be made at the level of Professor or Associate Professor. Responsibilities of the role include: • Promoting the College’s efforts to understand and realise the letter and the spirit of the University’s Māori Strategic Framework 2030, and te Tiriti o Waitangi. • Promoting the College’s efforts to understand and realise the letter and spirit of the University’s Pacific Strategic Framework (2022-2030). • Providing leadership and advocacy for the College within the University. • Maintaining and strengthening genuine relationships with papatipu rūnaka, Kāi Tahu whānui, education partners, and the wider community. • Liaising with other New Zealand Deans of Education, initial teacher education providers, the Ministry of Education, and the Teaching Council, as required. • Executive responsibility for financial, academic and administrative matters of the College, reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities). • Maintaining research productivity. The Dean will be supported by a collegial academic environment, an active and dynamic research culture, and by efficient professional services across the University. Skills and Experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako To be considered for appointment to this position, candidates should be able to demonstrate: • Commitment to upholding the mana of iwi Māori, and values, tikaka, kawa and mātauraka as guided by those with mana whenua status in our takiwā (region). • A distinguished and sustained record of research publication in education. • Experience of teaching in an area of initial teacher education and/or education studies in a tertiary setting. • Experience supervising postgraduate research students. • Evidence of international standing in the applicant’s field of expertise. Strong candidates for the position will also have a demonstrated record of academic leadership, display strong interpersonal skills, a genuine interest in others, an open communication style, clear decision-making ability, and a collegial leadership style.
