Overview:
The Dean oversees Student Support for Academics within the residential academy. Oversight encompasses all aspects related to the students’ academic experience from initial placement and scheduling to ongoing academic support throughout the students’ three years at the Academy. The Dean also guides the Academy’s efforts to make certain every student is known, challenged and supported academically in equitable ways. Inherent in this role is the willingness and ability to collaborate with, gather and consider input from students, parents and staff, including faculty. In addition, the Dean will collaborate with the Principal, the Dean of Academics and Equity, and the Dean of Scholars to support the Academy’s mission.
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry (www.imsa.edu).

Responsibilities:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Advanced degree; Education field preferred;
  • Minimum of five years teaching, counseling, or administration at the high-school or college level;
  • Significant leadership experience in secondary or higher education;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals and diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently, resolve issues, seek help when needed, and work on concurrent projects
  • Proficient with computerized accounting software including configuration and utilization
  • Experienced user of common computer hardware (e.g. laptops), office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office, budget software), mobile devices (e.g. phone), and common peripherals (e.g. printers, others…)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Bilingual in Spanish desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, loading, unloading and moving materials/boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.   • Manage Student Information System (Powerschool) through an equity lens
  • Schedule students in collaboration with the Dean of Academics
  • Manage and store grades
  • Monitor instructor input of comments and grades
  • Provide training and support of system
  • Coordinate placement testing and placement of incoming students in collaboration with the faculty, CACs and principal office team
  • Supervise and Evaluate
  • College and Academic Counselors, Registrar, and administrative staff supporting the CAC office
  • Informational Resource Center staff
  • Learning support staff: Learning Strategies Coordinator and Assistant, Writing Center staff, instructional coach(es)
  • Administrative Assistant shared with others in the Principal’s Office
  • Attendance/CAC Secretary
  • Evaluate a portion of the faculty as assigned by the Principal and Chief Academic Officer
  • Academic Support through an equity lens
  • Observe patterns in academic achievement
  • Review and approve continued enrollment of students at end of each semester

    • Create and manage student academic plans in collaboration with the CAC for all students on academic probation
  • Supervise and collaborate with the learning support team on the implementation of these plans.
  • Lead the student strategies team, focusing on ongoing support and monitoring of potential at risk students
  • Review and approve extended absences in collaboration with the chief student affairs officer
  • Review and approve grade appeals
  • Manage student/faculty grade issues
  • Oversee budget
  • Student accommodations
  • Lead family meetings to determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations for all students including residential and academic requests
  • Collaborate with the Director of Residence Life and School Nurse to coordinate and implement appropriate living accommodations
  • Collaborate with the learning support team to coordinate and implement appropriate learning accommodations
  • Maintain documentation of accommodation and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions,
  • Make recommendations to the families and residential and academic support teams as needed to revise accommodations to best meet evolving student needs
  • Primary contact for escalated (post-faculty contact) parental concerns
  • Investigate and address issues
  • Coordinate with the Dean of Academics with related concerns
  • Facilitate the implementation of Equity and Excellence for student support
  • Review existing policies and their impact on students within the classroom through an equity lens
  • Implement policies and accountability plans related to the scope of this position through an equity lens
