This role involves preparing and serving food, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring product quality, and adhering to food safety standards. The Deli Clerk works closely with other deli staff to stock, organize, and display products, and ensures a positive experience for customers by addressing their inquiries and fulfilling special requests. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a passion for food service, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Essential Functions: Customer Service and Transactions: • Operate cash register to itemize and total grocery and related items purchased. • Reconcile total payments received at the end of each work shift with total sales. • Provide professional customer service, assisting customers and responding to questions and requests promptly and pleasantly. • Address customer concerns and complaints, seeking timely and amicable resolutions. Store Operations: • Complete and process all required paperwork for work assignments. • Balance tills at the end of each shift, ensuring accuracy. • Assist in the operation of a computerized inventory record-keeping and reordering system. Stocking and Merchandising: • Receive and stock deli merchandise, ensuring shelves, coolers, freezers, and bins are organized and well-stocked. • Ensure merchandise is marked with accurate pricing, referring to the store Pricing Guide as needed. • Set up signs and displays to promote the movement of merchandise. • Ensure the deli area is always stocked and clean. Maintenance and Safety: • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized store environment, including general maintenance tasks such as mopping, dusting, and trash removal. • Follow all food safety guidelines and sanitation practices, including proper handling, storage, and preparation of food items. • Regularly check and maintain food temperature controls (refrigeration, hot holding) to ensure compliance with safety standards. • Clean and sanitize food preparation areas, utensils, and equipment according to established protocols to prevent cross-contamination. • Dispose of expired or unsafe food items in a timely manner, following store policies and health regulations. • Adhere to all Tribal, state, and federal food safety laws and regulations to maintain a safe and healthy environment for customers and staff. Additional Duties: • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Understanding of basic food safety practices, including proper food handling, storage, and sanitation to prevent contamination. • Familiarity with deli products, preparation methods, and presentation to provide accurate information to customers. • Knowledge of applicable health codes, safety regulations, and food handling laws (TOSHA, OSHA, etc.). • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with customers, answer questions, and resolve concerns effectively. • Capacity to perform various tasks simultaneously while maintaining high standards of service and cleanliness. • Ability to ensure the accurate pricing, stocking, and display of products, as well as attention to food quality and presentation. Minimum Qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent or currently enrolled in such programs. • Previous cashier or retail experience preferred but not required. • Availability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Preferred Qualifications: • 1-2 years of experience in a deli, grocery, or food service environment. • Proven ability to handle customer interactions professionally and courteously. • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Physical Requirements: • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per shift) in a fast-paced environment. • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. • Ability to use hands and fingers for food preparation, handling small items, and operating kitchen equipment. • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to retrieve items, clean work areas, and perform food prep tasks.
