Primary objective
Provide dental assistance in a professional manner, which will contribute to the improved oral health and wellbeing of clients,
families and communities within the Oral Health Northern Territory Wide Service.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide chair-side assistance for dental professionals delivering services to adults and children in a variety of locations
and settings throughout the region.
2. Undertake decontamination and sterilisation procedures in accordance with Australian Standards.
3. Prepare and store consumables and reusable medical devices according to relevant standards and manufacture
specifications.
4. Comply with infection control measures in accordance with Australian Standards, and departmental procedures to
ensure patient and employee safety.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces
6. Assist with the management of appointment schedules including booking, cancellation, rebooking and confirming
appointments using paper and electronic schedules.
7. Actively participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), staff development and health promotion activities.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Minimum Certificate III in Dental Assisting and previous experience and knowledge working as a Dental Assistant.
2. Demonstrated reliability, self-motivation, initiative and ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary
team.
3. Well-developed time management skills and the ability to prioritise competing requirements and work effectively under
pressure with frequently changing priorities.
4. Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
5. Flexibility to adapt work practices when working in a variety of locations and environments.
6. Ability and willingness to travel to remote communities by light aircraft or 4WD vehicle for periods of up to five days.
7. Demonstrated ability to foster a positive workplace culture by following appropriate workplace behaviour and maintain
confidentiality.
8. Well-developed skills and experience in a range of computer software packages and mainframe applications.
Desirable
1. Possess a Northern Territory driver’s licence.
