Job Details Job Location: Madison Heights, VA 24572 General Position Summary: The Dental Hygienist performs preventive dental procedures, including dental prophylaxis, scaling, radiographs, and sealants, as prescribed by the Dentist at Johnson Health Center (JHC). Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Patient/Customer Relations: Educates patients on dental disease and preventative home care, including brushing and flossing techniques. Staff Relations/Team Building: Consult with the dentist and other members of the health care team as necessary. Acts to facilitate communication between the members of the health care team, including clinical and non-clinical staff. Performs other necessary duties as required by JHC and as directed by the Dentist to meet the goal of providing oral health care services. Works with Dental Assistant Lead for Procurify at base location for placing orders. Assists with Sterilization if necessary. Clinical Duties: Performs preventive dental care for patients as prescribed by the Dentist. This includes periodontal charting, dental scaling, prophylaxis, fluoride treatment, taking appropriate diagnostic x-rays, and applying dental sealants. Performs preliminary examination of patient’s dentition and gingiva, including charting existing restorations, any dental pathology, and measuring and recording periodontal pocket depths. Initiates PriorAuthorization process for expanded service procedures and collaborates with billing/front office. Cleans instruments, performs tray set up and updates patient’s medical information in the EMR. Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of the Dental Hygienist position. Administrative Duties: Performs limited administrative functions involving treatment notes and charting for patient dental records and health histories. Responsible for checking Telephone Encounters/Call Pool and other administrative tasks. Performance Improvement Activities: Attends monthly dental department staff meetings, all staff meetings, and encouraged participation at JHC optional events. Maintains CE requirements per Virginia Board of Dentistry. Safety/Infection Control Activities: Attends all mandatory OSHA infection control seminars, and follows general OSHA guidelines for infection control, including “Universal Precautions.” Abides by all JHC infection control policies, including acute response measures in the setting of a public health concern or disease outbreak. Physical Demand and Working Environment: Fast-paced office setting with travel to other offices often. Lifting and/or exerting force up to 35 pounds occasionally, with frequently moving of objects. Work requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, and stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion with certain activities. OSHA high-risk position Qualifications Must be a Registered Dental Hygienist. Must be licensed to practice Dental Hygiene in the Commonwealth of Virginia or have the ability to gain access upon hire. Previous experience in a dental setting preferred. Ability to relate effectively with patients and staff. Ability to be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques. Must be able to work independently as a team member in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to make decisions on patient care that reflect professional strength, confidence, and integrity.
