JOB SUMMARY:
The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves as the senior executive leader for the Department. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of excellence in: strategic development of people and organizations, team and organizational leadership, collaborative management and execution, and benefactor engagement; and national recognition for academic accomplishments, such as via tenure, in emergency medicine and healthcare innovation, federally funded independent research, and education. The ideal candidate will be a practicing emergency physician with fellowship training and a record of clinical excellence.
The Chair will be responsible for overseeing and maintaining excellence in the Department’s clinical, education, and research programs in collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine and its clinical affiliates, University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine), and University of Colorado Health (UCHealth). The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bring together teams to advance the common goals of the Department and the institution. The successful candidate will be a strong collaborative leader, with a proven track record of administration, education, and research. Candidates should also have a keen understanding of the complexities of an academic Department of Emergency Medicine and the ability to lead the further growth and development of the Department in all missions.
The Department Chair is expected to work collegially with other chairs and center directors at the School of Medicine and with colleagues at its clinical affiliates, which include UCHealth, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and Denver Health.
Key Responsibilities:
The Chair will lead the clinical, educational, and research programs of the Department of Emergency Medicine, with an emphasis on building excellence and collaboration within the School of Medicine and with our broad group of partners. The Department’s Steering Committee provides guidance and support to the Chair on Departmental issues and planning. The Chair will:
- Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department, in collaboration with the leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and its affiliates.
- Ensure the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical, educational, and research missions of the University.
- Ensure a state-of-the-art education and advanced training of medical students, graduate students, residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral fellows.
- Work with the Vice Chair of Research to continue to develop the Department’s research portfolio and clinical trials to determine the priorities of the Department and support principal investigators and other faculty in efforts to secure extramural funding.
- Work in partnership with the Director of Finance to monitor the Department’s fiscal management, determine the best use of funds per strategic direction and build up clinical reserves and philanthropy to ensure resources for future projects, recruitments, and Departmental needs.
- Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding faculty. Address system-level factors adversely impacting faculty well-being.

- Devise a work ethic framework that is productive and respectful of staff well-being.
- Work collaboratively with leaders of the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus, including fellow chairs, administrators, faculty, and staff.
- Reinforce campus-wide initiatives to support translational research.
- Have a vision aligned with the strategic plan of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, UCHealth and the Anschutz Medical Campus.
- Serve on the School of Medicine Executive Committee and on the board of University of Colorado Medicine, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation that provides practice and business management services for nearly 3,000 faculty physicians and advanced practice providers of the School of Medicine.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Doctorate degree (MD/DO) with board certification in Emergency Medicine or related field
- Strong track record of professional accomplishments on a national and international scale with a strong focus on clinical success, education, and research, meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Professor level.

- Demonstrated capability across the spectrum of individual scholarship, collaborative academic leadership, clinical and research program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, and community engagement, and will have designed, implemented, and integrated effective programs across complex organizations.
- Ability to build strong relationships with others in an environment where the medical school and the clinical system are partners and where the Department of Emergency Medicine fulfills expectations that it will be a leader within the overall institution.
- Previous experience as a division chief, vice chair, or chair of emergency medicine who has developed academic leaders, mentored and developed junior faculty, and identified and recruited students, trainees, staff, and faculty.
- Knowledge to utilize research funding and development trends as they evolve.
- A dynamic, passionate, and experienced physician and administrative leader.
- Understanding of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and healthcare delivery organizations with significant financial management experience.
- Tenured faculty appointment.
- National reputation in emergency medicine research, education, or innovation.
- Extensive research funding and high-impact publication record.
- History of building or transforming large, successful interdisciplinary academic programs.
- Demonstrated leadership across all mission areas—clinical operations, education, and federally funded research.
- Track record of recruiting and mentoring interdisciplinary faculty.
- Proven track record mentoring senior faculty and executive leaders in academic medicine, clinical operations, or national programs.
- History of highly competitive national awards for leadership.
- Experience securing significant philanthropic gifts from benefactors and launching or managing public relations efforts to increase the visibility of the Department.
- Experience working with private sector or industry in academic research partnerships.
- Experience leading large-scale, federally funded, multi-institutional programs or consortia with national impact.
- Experience working with federal leaders and government relations, including collaboration with Senators, Members of Congress, or state executive leaders.
- Demonstrated success navigating and aligning priorities across academic institutions, health systems, federal agencies, and the private sector.
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing, mission-driven teams in complex and fast-evolving environments.
- National service through study sections, boards, or strategic advisory roles at federal agencies or national organizations.
