ABOUT US
One of the 10 departments within the UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) is a world-leading centre for teaching, research and public engagement, focusing on the literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film and other aspects of the cultures associated with the wide range of languages we teach. Alongside undergraduate programmes based in Modern Languages or Comparative Literature, SELCS is home to a thriving community of graduate students (both MA / MSc and PhD). Staff are actively involved in interdisciplinary teaching and research within the Department, Faculty and across UCL, as well as in collaborations with various institutions in London and internationally.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Department Manager (DM) is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Department, ensuring the delivery of an efficient, responsive and effective administrative service across departmental planning, financial management, facilities management, staffing and resource planning, student admissions, marketing and communication, programme and module administration and support for examinations and assessment.
They will actively, and proactively, support the Head of Department (HoD) in planning, implementing strategy and providing management information to inform data-driven decisions. Ensuring effective implementation of statutory regulations, UCL and departmental policies and procedures is central to the role as is the ability to provide wider strategic and operational support to the equality, diversity, and inclusion activities within the department.
You will be an experienced line manager who will lead and support the department’s Professional Services (PS) team, ensuring the development of your team members in order to establish a strong team culture. This will be underlined by an emphasis on provision of a high-quality service and iterative review and innovation re the same.
A key part of the role will be the ability to implement change and support continuous improvement across the department and wider Faculty, especially as part of the current pan-UCL Services Simplification change programme, amongst others. As a senior member of PS staff in the Faculty (of Arts and Humanities), you will also contribute to Departmental, Faculty and institutional level activities – the latter as capacity allows.
