QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • A medical degree recognized in Canada;
  • Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine;
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice as a specialist in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Saskatchewan with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
  • Demonstrated experience providing strategic leadership in public health, including developing and implementing health programs, policies, or strategies.
  • Expertise in epidemiology, health surveillance, and population health assessment.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and collaboration across diverse sectors, including government, health authorities, Indigenous communities, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public health and preventive medicine principles, including health promotion, disease prevention, and communicable disease control.
  • Strong ethical standards, integrity, and credibility within the public health community.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills to build networks and engage effectively with stakeholders.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking abilities to address complex public health challenges.
  • Familiarity with Saskatchewan’s health system or experience in government/public health settings is an asset.
Responsibilities

In this critical role, you will:

  • Provide expert medical and public health leadership to develop and implement policies, standards, and programs including health assessment and measurement, health promotion, disease and injury prevention and health protection.
  • Monitor and report on population health and respond to emerging health challenges, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practices.
  • Collaborate with key partners, including the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), other ministries, Indigenous governments and organizations, and national and international stakeholders.
  • Support legislative responsibilities and the Chief MHO to administer the legislated functions and responsibilities of the position as outlined in The Public Health Act, 1994 and regulations.
  • Act as a spokesperson on public health matters, representing Saskatchewan in federal/provincial/territorial committees and providing trusted advice to decision-makers.
  • Contribute to research and education, supporting capacity building in the field of public health and supervising students and residents, with potential academic appointment opportunities at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine
