Position Conditions: This position is a full time, permanent position within the Fire and Emergency Services Department at the City of Brandon.
Rate of Pay: $162,274.86 per year (July 1, 2024 Rate)
Closing Date: Open until filled.
This competition will include testing and an interview.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Internal candidates must be actively enrolled in the BFES Succession Development Program and have successfully completed the probationary period in their current role.
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of service in Brandon Fire and Emergency Services or a comparable fully integrated Fire / EMS dual-service department.
  • Must hold a full ranked position of Captain, Fire Prevention Officer, Lieutenant, Inspector, or Training Officer in Brandon Fire and Emergency Services or a comparable fully integrated Fire / EMS dual-service department, for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma
  • Must have completed, or be in the process of completing, the Fire Service Administration Certificate from Dalhousie University or a related post-secondary institution.
  • Must possess a valid and subsisting Class 4 with Air endorsement Province of Manitoba driver’s licence (or equivalent and must be able to transfer to Manitoba).
  • Must hold and maintain College of Paramedics of Manitoba License (or equivalent and must be able to transfer to Manitoba ).
    Note: Prior to commencing employment, candidates are required to submit the following checks. Each must be valid, clear, and meet the satisfaction of the department. Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child & Adult Abuse Registry Check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness in Fire and Emergency Medical Services to bring about change in a municipal and unionized environment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a progressive leadership position.
  • Experience participating in recruitment and selection processes.
  • Experience supporting department procurement of equipment and vehicles.

The Deputy Chief of Emergency Services’ workload and environment may affect their emotional or stress levels.

  • Deals with opposition or resistance to change (daily).
  • Demanding issues involving employees and/or union groups (frequently).

employees in the immediate future (ongoing).

  • Limited succession planning initiatives are in place (ongoing).

Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Deputy Chief of Emergency Services is responsible for the operations of Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and its Divisions, as directed by the Chief of Emergency Services, and to ensure the seamless delivery of services to the community.

The duties of the Deputy Chief of Emergency Services are carried out in a variety of City facilities.
