Position Summary The Deputy Director of EMS assists the EMS Director in the leadership, management, and operational oversight of the EMS department. This role helps ensure the delivery of high-quality emergency medical services, supports staff development, oversees daily operations, and ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local EMS regulations. The Deputy Director acts on behalf of the EMS Director when necessary and plays a key role in strategic planning, quality improvement, and operational efficiency. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist the EMS Director with the administration and daily operations of the EMS department. Supervise EMS personnel including paramedics, EMTs, and supervisors. Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance management of EMS staff. Ensure compliance with state EMS regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies. Assist in developing and implementing departmental policies, protocols, and procedures. Monitor operational performance, response times, and service delivery metrics. Participate in budget planning, resource allocation, and cost control. Coordinate with hospitals, fire departments, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies. Assist with quality assurance and quality improvement (QA/QI) initiatives. Investigate incidents, complaints, and operational issues and recommend corrective actions. Support emergency preparedness, disaster response, and special operations planning. Represent the EMS department in meetings, committees, and community outreach events. Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the EMS Director. Qualifications Education Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare Administration, Public Administration, or related field preferred. Experience Minimum 5–7 years of EMS experience, including supervisory or leadership experience. Certifications/Licensure Current Paramedic certification (state licensed). Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications (or ability to obtain). Additional certifications such as NIMS/ICS training preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of EMS operations, protocols, and regulatory requirements. Leadership and team management skills. Ability to analyze operational data and implement improvements. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-pressure emergency environment. Proficiency in EMS reporting systems and scheduling software. Physical Requirements Ability to respond to emergency scenes if necessary. Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, and perform duties in various environments typical of EMS operations. Work Environment Office and field environment including EMS stations, ambulances, hospitals, and emergency scenes. May require on-call availability, nights, weekends, and holidays.
