Job Details Position Type: Full-time, regular Job Category: Exempt Reports to: General Counsel Department: Legal Position classification: Exempt, full time Compensation range: $165,000–$180,000 per annum Work site: On-site (Washington, D.C., office) Summary American Progress is seeking a Deputy General Counsel (DGC) to play a critical leadership role within the Legal team and broader organization, leading the risk management and compliance program and overseeing external legal matters, including contract negotiation and regulatory compliance. The DGC will work with two legal counsel and two legal assistants, collaborate with senior leadership, and act as a strategic thought partner to ensure legal risk mitigation, operational compliance, and mission-aligned decision-making. Responsibilities: Oversee day-to-day operations of the Legal team, providing expert legal advice to administration, advocacy, communications, development, and policy teams to help achieve the American Progress mission. Supervise two legal counsels, including by setting performance goals, providing regular feedback, supporting professional development, and conducting formal evaluations. Manage external-facing legal matters; assess factual and legal risks; develop matter-specific strategy; manage outside counsel; coordinate with insurance providers; and provide overall risk assessment. Lead the negotiation, drafting, review, and execution of third-party contracts, including sublease agreements, vendor agreements, consulting contracts, and renewals. Oversee the contract management system and ensure timely monitoring of renewal periods and termination provisions. Support the Development team by reviewing grant agreements and reports. Partner closely with the Human Resources team to design and implement all employee policies, ensuring thoroughness, consistency, and legal compliance. In coordination with the General Counsel, lead negotiations for union agreements and foster a positive, constructive relationship with union leadership and respect for workers’ rights. Work with union representatives to ensure fair and consistent application of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Design and implement programs to test, monitor, and document compliance with all American Progress policies. Ensure the Legal team provides timely and accurate review of publications, social media content, event proposals, and other external communications. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements and qualifications: J.D. from an accredited law school; admission to at least one U.S. state bar in good standing. Experience with tax-exempt organizations, especially dual-entity nonprofit organizations—501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4). 10-plus years of relevant legal experience, including litigation and regulatory matters, contract negotiation and management, and risk compliance. Experience being an awesome supervisor. Experience with union negotiations or labor relations is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of nonprofit compliance, including tax-exempt laws, lobbying and advocacy rules, ethics rules, and defamation considerations. Excellent judgment, analytical ability, communication skills, and collaborative leadership style. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
