Job description
The Deputy Ombudsman (Complaints) is responsible for leading the work to provide independent oversight of the complaints process nationally, for prisoners, those on community supervision (probation) and in immigration removal centres.
The postholder holds the additional role of Director of Independent Prisoner Complaint Investigations (IPCI). This is the name of the complaint investigation work that the PPO undertakes across the entire prison and youth estate.
The postholder is responsible for ensuring the provision of good quality, timely investigations that meet published targets and respond appropriately to complainants and the services in remit in order to build confidence in the criminal justice system in prisoners, prison staff, ministers and the public.
They provide leadership and direction to all staff within the complaints function at the PPO, including managers, investigators and assessors, ensuring that effective management and administrative systems are in place, fit for purpose and fully functional.
The postholder must be a high performing and experienced leader who is able to work at pace and deal with daily conflicting priorities. They must have the ability to coach and support direct reports to provide inspirational leadership for a function with a current complement of 52 posts.
