DEPUTY R&D AND INNOVATION CHIEF (DEPUTY TO THE VP – DIGITAL & CISO)

WHO WE ARE

We are the Silicon Valley R&D office of a Japanese airline. Our team supports a portfolio of systems ranging from mobile applications and inflight software to booking, payments, data infrastructure, identity, and cybersecurity. The work is high-impact and fast-paced, involving integration of enterprise-grade IT in a regulated, safety-critical global environment. We support both long-term architecture and near-term operational resilience.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Native-level English; Business-level Japanese (verbal and written)
• Strong technical literacy: ability to interpret system architecture, logs, APIs, and basic network/infra diagrams
• Experience leading programs that intersect software, infrastructure, vendors, and compliance
• Familiar with regulated systems and secure enterprise IT environments
• Comfortable working independently while syncing closely with global leadership

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must have a current, valid passport
• Willing and able to travel internationally (primarily Japan) several times per year
• Willing to work late-PDT or early-JST hours to support cross-border coordination
• Must be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (hybrid model with onsite presence expected)

THE ROLE

This is a hands-on, cross-functional role that combines elements of technical program management, IT systems coordination, and strategic operations. You will serve as the principal deputy to the VP – Digital & CISO, helping to manage the airline’s global digital roadmap. The work spans real-time systems, vendor integration, regulatory readiness, platform security, and daily coordination across multiple time zones.
The ideal candidate has strong technical fluency, project execution discipline, and the ability to drive outcomes across teams with different priorities and cultural norms. You’ll also need to communicate clearly in both English and Japanese, and be prepared for occasional international travel.
