Description Terms: Full-Time / Non-Exempt / Full Benefits Salary: $25.18 to $27.95 per hour, Grade 6 Application Deadline: January 28, 2026 About the Role: Serves as a Deputy to the County Veterans Service Officer. The Deputy Veterans Service Officer is accountable to the official for the execution of department policies and procedures. Duties include, but not limited to, managing the office, directing the work of others, and signing correspondence and legal documents in the absence of the elected or appointed official. Duties & Responsibilities: Provides clients with information related to veteran’s benefits services and programs. Interview, counsel and assist in preparing and file claims for service-connected disability compensation, non-service-connected disability pension, and widow’s pension. Verify benefits received. Assist claimant in obtaining documentation and records. Maintain veterans’ records and provide certified presented. Research, interpret and apply updated state and federal law, regulations and rules for each situation presented. Provide off-site assistance to veterans/dependents to include nursing home, hospital, and in-home visits. Assist veterans/dependents in correcting problems encountered in receiving benefits. Research claim status, review findings and advise clients. Apply for benefits through the North Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs grant and aid loan programs. Assists clients with enrollment into the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system. Assist in obtaining appointments with health care providers or emergency care as needed, including travel arrangements. Develops working relationships with various governmental agencies to assist clients, coordinate services and obtain further information. Refers clients to other governmental and agency programs. Assists the department head through planning for future needs, staffing, and budget planning. Provides guidance and technical assistance to office staff and volunteers. Manages the office and represents the department to the Board of County Commissions in the absence of the department head. Performs other duties as required and assigned. Requirements Associate degree with major coursework in business, public administration, social science, or related field; and three (3) years’ experience performing customer service in a professional environment. Preference will be given to honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Must successfully complete accreditations training with the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers within two (2) years from the date of employment. Must be proficient with computer technology, including MS Office suite. Ability to work with diverse population groups. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Ability to research, interpret, and apply a complex set of laws, rules, and regulations. Requires a high degree of written and verbal communication skills dealing with employees, clients, or the public. Ability to handle multiple duties and priorities under limited supervision along with the ability to direct and motivate other employees.
