Do you want to be able to help improve our product reliability and thus increase our customer satisfaction? We are offering this unique opportunity to you at ABB Oy, System Drives division, Product Engineering and Quality (PEQ), Modules team in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland. In this role you will be working as a (Senior) Design Engineer in Drives CSI (Customer, Supplier, Investigation) laboratory where you will be the spearhead of our failure analysis and product reliability efforts.

This position reports to Product Engineering Manager.

Your responsibilities:

  • Performing failure and root cause analysis using the most advanced laboratory equipment including documenting and sharing the results
  • Defining and executing DOE (Design of Experiments) to investigate the reliability of components used in Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) products
  • Developing and mastering your skills of using state-of-the-art analysis equipment including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray, acoustic microscope, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) etc.
  • Becoming an expert at sample preparation using materialographic preparation as well as mechanical and chemical decapsulation
  • Co-ordinating laboratory work queue as well as allocating tasks to laboratory trainees
  • Networking in a global environment and sharing findings and results to PEQ, R&D, technical support, and other stakeholders

Your background:

  • Experience in operating some of the following: Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray, or microsectioning equipment, as well as enthusiasm to learn and master more analysis methods
  • Sound knowledge of failure and root cause analysis
  • Master of Science or higher degree in Material science, Physics, Mechanics, Electronics or Electrical engineering
  • General knowledge about the structure of electrical and electromechanical components as well as power semiconductors are of great benefit
  • You have hands-on mentality and enthusiasm towards laboratory work
  • You have open-minded attitude for challenges and learning new, and good cooperation and team working skills with ability to work independently
  • Fluent in English both written and spoken as sharing the results both by presenting and writing reports are highly important. Knowledge of Finnish language is beneficial
