Description

DESIGN ENGINEER III SUMMARY:

Applies engineering skills to product development and process design. Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes by performing the following duties. Assists Research and Development (R&D) Supervisor with various aspects of product development. Conducts or arranges laboratory and production testing for products and materials. Assists in process improvements.

DESIGN ENGINEER III EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in Mechanical or Civil, Engineering, or strong knowledge of engineering principles
  • Experience in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or related field: 4 -7 Years
  • Experience in project management & cost estimating helpful: 4 - 7 Years
  • 2 years Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks experience
  • Experience interpreting product design layouts, and basic drafting room practices
  • Experience using calipers and other gauges to check measurements
  • Experience with metal fabricated parts and/or metal fabricating equipment extremely helpful

DESIGN ENGINEER III OTHER SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to Identify and analyze problems and shortcomings in current products and processes
  • Knowledge of basic drafting room practices
  • Able to read engineering / architectural drawings
  • 3D CAD proficiency
  • Outside of box thinker, creative in engineering and steel modification; strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite products

Responsibilities

DESIGN ENGINEER III ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Create 3D CAD models of existing parts, proposed modifications, and new components, including detailed drawings and blueprints derived from CAD models.
  • Review and verify part dimensions, material specifications, and the relationship of individual components to each other and to the overall product structure.
  • Support product testing and validation to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, manufacturing processes, and materials science to develop accurate and effective designs.
  • Contribute to the design and continuous improvement of new and existing products.
  • Assist in the specification, selection, and evaluation of materials appropriate for design and production requirements.
  • Design and assess production processes, including equipment specifications and overall process flow.
  • Utilize 3D printing technology for prototyping and testing, including operation, material selection, and file preparation for additive manufacturing processes.
  • Incorporate 3D printing considerations into product designs to support rapid prototyping and iterative development.
  • Learn and apply industry standards and understand manufacturing capabilities and limitations—including additive manufacturing—to inform product design.
  • Implement design changes in accordance with established change management procedures.
  • Properly manage and archive all drawings and design files using the company’s Product Data Management (PDM) system.
  • Provide design support for various departments, including trade show layouts, office space planning, and plant layouts.
  • Assist with quality control initiatives to maintain product and process standards.
  • Support environmental, health, and safety (EHS) compliance efforts as needed.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures
