With a heritage dating back to the 1930’s and based in Portsmouth Dockyard, 1710 Naval Air Squadron is a mixed Civil Service and Military team of technical specialists from multidisciplinary backgrounds, that uses scientific and engineering reasoning to overcome UK MOD aircraft operational issues to recover, sustain and enhance aviation and general military capability.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This exciting and varied post sits within our Modifications Department, working in tandem with UK military Delivery Teams and Front Line Commands to deliver new and upgraded capability across all UK military aviation platforms. The Department ensures UK helicopter, fixed wing and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) fleets have the equipment and technology needed to help protect the UK and our Armed Forces from constantly evolving, real world threats. The Department delivers assured industry standard aircraft modifications in support of urgent operational and safety requirements, using modern techniques including 3D scanning, 3D printing, and integrated CAD/CAM. The team design all aspects of modifications from early prototyping, scoping and planning installations, integrating systems, through to manufacturing and flying trials. Examples include introducing new communications, navigation, avionics, proximity alert systems and adapting role equipment fits, such as medical casualty evacuation capability.
Travel opportunities to additional sites, off-site trials, conferences and visits to external partners could be a part of your role.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

As an Aircraft Mechanical Design Engineer within our team you will be responsible for:
• Interpreting client’s engineering requirements
• Early prototyping and design progression
• Generating design solutions for aircraft system integration
• Off- and on-aircraft testing and integration of systems
• Producing design solutions and engineering drawings for aircraft modifications
• Gathering design data to ensure compliance with airworthiness design requirements
Previous experience is desirable, but not essential, and would include:
• Aeronautical engineering and/or design experience in aircraft Mechanical systems
• Relevant technical knowledge
• Working knowledge of 3D CAD systems (such as Autodesk’s Inventor software)
• Strong IT skills
With strong English and Maths skills we’re seeking applicants with a Level 3 Qualification OR practical engineering experience related to Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering.

APPRENTICESHIPS

If successful we could support you through an apprenticeship in a role related field.
An apprenticeship is a combined package of work and training. Through an apprenticeship, you will gain professional knowledge, practical experience, and broader skills to upskill you in your current role and pave the way for your future career. Most training will be ‘on-the-job’, with the remaining ‘off-the-job’ training often delivered by a training provider. This means minimal disruption and maximum impact.
Professional qualifications can be achieved through an apprenticeship, ranging from Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs) to Levels 4-7.
Apprenticeships normally last between 12 months and 3 years, depending on the level. Anyone can undertake an apprenticeship, and everyone, regardless of age, can benefit from developing their skills in an accredited way. Successful candidates can discuss their development options with their manager when in post.
The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
