Description

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

BS degree in engineering or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in design engineering, or an MS and at least 4 years of relevant experience or a PhD.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

One or more of the following:

  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Experience working with mechanical, HVAC, structural, and electrical disciplines.
  • Experience in progressing prototype hardware into production-ready components.
  • Experience working on engineering projects associated with designing structures, systems or components (SSCs).
  • Experience with vibrations/frequency modes of dynamic systems and high-speed rotating equipment.
  • Finite Element (FE) modeling/analysis.
  • Expertise with 3D CAD modeling drafting, and product data management (PDM) systems.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks.
  • Experience creating and maintaining design documents in a quality controlled/managed work process environment.
  • Strong experience in mechanical system design, analysis and fabrication.
  • Experience in the design and startup of pilot scale research processes.
  • Requirements management of critical design attributes or safety significant systems.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems, ability to technically analyze and communicate engineering problems and to propose potential solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

EXPERIENCE FOCUSING IN ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIALTIES PREFERRED:

  • Robotic Systems and Additive Manufacturing (AM): Robotic systems design, AM process efficiency, system integration, energy efficiency.
  • Isotope Enrichment Devices: Complex testbed design, mechanical and process design, detailed design, instrumentation drawings, and fabrication.
  • Instruments: Design, validation, procurement, and installation support for mechanical systems related to nuclear instrumentation.
  • Fusion Components: Fusion environments, component integration, vacuum/water cooling, ITER project collaboration.
  • Plasma-based Enrichment Technology: Design, fabrication, SolidWorks CAD, compliance with engineering codes, high voltage/electromagnetic components.
  • Power Converter and Motor Assembly Engineer: Mechanical/electrical engineering technology, motor winding, electrical system assembly, prototype design/testing, power converters.
  • Turbomachinery Engineering: Rotor/bearing/damper turbomachinery systems modeling, rotor dynamics, software development in C++/Python.
  • Cryogenic Systems Engineer: Operation and maintenance of cryogenic systems, helium liquefier systems, cryogenic test facilities.
  • Mechanical Systems Quality Engineer (Manufacturing and Inspection): Fabrication, process and quality control engineering, tooling design, GD&T, CMM operation, DOE clearance preferred.
  • Nuclear Fuel and Core Components Fabrication Engineer: Nuclear and mechanical engineering, nuclear/fabrication experience, aluminum welding, nuclear materials handling.
  • Turbomachinery Rotor/Bearing/Damper System Engineer: Rotor/bearing/damper system modeling and testing, high-fidelity predictive analysis, non-destructive testing.
Responsibilities

Job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform engineering design, drafting, 3D scanning and product data management services across multiple disciplines, including mechanical, HVAC, structural, and electrical.
  • Plan and supervise validation testing.
  • Oversee the installation of components and systems.
  • Participate in work planning and evaluation activities.
  • Work effectively with a diverse set of team members to meet project goals.
  • Produce accurate and concise technical reports and design documentation.
  • Prepare presentations for technical design reviews and advisory committees.
  • Participate in R&D activities and prototyping of proposed new equipment.
  • Accurately and reliably communicate technical status and performance to ORNL management.
