Job Description As a Design Engineer within our van conversion business, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high‑quality engineering solutions that convert base vehicles into fully compliant, functional, and innovative commercial products. You will produce technical drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation that ensure each conversion meets customer requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance (including VCA, IVA, COC, and OEM guidelines). Working closely with production, procurement, and commercial teams, you will ensure all designs are practical, cost‑efficient, safe, and deliverable at scale. Key Responsibilities: Design & Engineering Produce high‑quality CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation for van conversion products. Develop bespoke conversion solutions based on customer specifications, ensuring functional, cost‑effective, and compliant designs. Perform engineering calculations, load assessments, and structural considerations where necessary. Support prototype builds, validating designs through practical testing and real‑world assessment. Regulatory & Compliance Ensure all designs comply with relevant legislation and industry standards, including VCA, IVA, COC, and OEM guidelines. Maintain a robust understanding of current vehicle legislation to guarantee all designs are compliant before release. Production & Operational Support Work closely with production teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with existing processes. Provide engineering support during product build, resolving issues and updating designs where improvements are required. Assist in developing SOPs, BOMs, and technical build instructions. Continuous Improvement & Innovation Drive engineering improvements across product lines, focusing on efficiency and product quality. Contribute to R&D initiatives, exploring new materials, methods, and conversion technologies. Cross‑Functional Collaboration Collaborate with Commercial teams to support tenders, quotes, and technical customer requirements. Engage with suppliers to ensure components meet technical, commercial, and quality expectations. Qualifications Essential Proven experience in an engineering design role, ideally in vehicle conversions or automotive engineering. Strong proficiency with CAD software. Understanding of mechanical engineering principles. Knowledge of vehicle regulatory standards (VCA, IVA, COC). Ability to produce engineering drawings to manufacturing standards. Desirable Experience in a production or manufacturing environment. Knowledge of electrical systems or vehicle body structures. Experience with R&D engineering. Relevant engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree).
