Description

Job Title: Design Engineer
Location: 11012 Aurora-Hudson Road, Streetsboro, OH 44241
Shift: 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday
Manager: Director of Engineering
Carries out research and development activities. Plans, sets up and conducts combustion experiments, and maintains critical lab instruments. Documents technical findings in a coherent and concise manner. Trains engineering staff, new employees and interns in both classroom and lab environments. Manages multiple product design and/or product improvement projects. Conducts factory testing for quality as needed. Contributes and supports sales team as technical advisor and product advocate. Develops and implements effective methods through external partnerships, technologies, engineering tools, analysis, etc., to meet the Selas Vision Objectives. Presents technical results at tradeshows and seeks patents for innovative ideas.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of thermal sciences, combustion chemistry, fluid dynamics, controls, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to write patent applications and prepare inputs to counsel, complete patent searches to ensure avoidance of infringement and freedom to operate claims.
  • Ability to analyze diverse range of industrial process heating products to evaluate market trends that would influence the new product development process.
  • Understanding of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and other code requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret tolerance blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites when needed.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all departments and levels of the organization with a strong focus in a team-based work environment.
  • Advanced mathematical skills for calculation of design equations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain technical specifics to peers and customers.
  • Time-management skills for meeting deadlines.

EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION:

  • 4-year degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, etc.)
  • Professional Engineering license and memberships with technical affiliations a plus
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with any combination of combustion, heat transfer, thermodynamics, boiler, or process heating design.
  • Experience with trade certifications a plus (i.e. UL, CE, FM, CSA, and others).
  • Familiar with NFPA 85 and 86 standards.
  • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD.
  • Understands ISO requirements that impact Quality Systems.
  • Familiarity with fluid flow, CFD, heat transfer, pneumatics, and PLC programming is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Designs and develops combustion products and systems in accordance with management directives.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Develops manufacturing drawings in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Designs and optimizes mechanical & electronic components.
  • Directs technicians in construction of components and burner systems in support of NPD.
  • Interprets computer-based models of combustion systems based on computational fluid dynamics and chemical combustion modeling.
  • Specifies system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Tests alternative techniques and methods; recommends changes in procedures or equipment as necessary.
  • Interfaces with outside vendors for component selection, manufacturing, and assembly.
  • Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Confers with Process and System engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Serves as a project engineer on select products or process improvements, especially those implementing new or advanced combustion and burner technologies.
  • Applies sound test techniques to capture data for verification and validation of design requirements.
  • Consolidates detailed test data into concise presentations that allow staff or customers to evaluate results.
  • Prepares white papers for internal use, publication on the Selas web page, or for technical conferences.
  • Conducts and participates in training sessions, seminars, and continuing education to stay abreast of new technical developments.
  • Manages projects and timelines.
  • Articulates technology and product positioning to both technical and business users and customers.
  • Represents the company on industry committees related to combustion and burner technologies.
  • Assists in the selection and supervision of interns and co-ops.
  • Plans lab testing and maintains activity records.
  • Keeps up with the latest combustion technologies.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
