Description

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, the Design Engineer designs sheet metal products from components to complete assemblies, meeting or exceeding customer production and quality standards, and meeting customer delivery requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering and three to five years of related experience, or seven to ten years of progressively responsible related experience, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience with SolidWorks.
  • Previous experience with FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, professional journals, and blueprints.
  • Ability to write reports and documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of pal and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Customer-oriented and mild-mannered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach above shoulders. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move drawings, files, parts, components, and manuals weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary occasionally.
· Design parts to manufacture either from a customer model or from a customer concept. This will include confirming all designed components meet the customer requirements.
· Review and interpret customer specifications and determine manufacturability with current capabilities.
· Communicate directly with customer Engineering and Procurement personnel to ensure the company has all the necessary information to be successful with the design and manufacture of the components.
· Program and maintain design layouts in SolidWorks and utilizing the proper document storage locations.
· Adhere to company processes for documentation and design of components and Sheet Metal Systems.
· Redesign standard products, improving quality and productivity, while reducing costs.
· Evaluate and select components and parts for the products.
· Work with Purchasing to initiate purchase orders.
· Develop working relationships with Operations Team to address and resolve problems and to develop better cooperation for working together toward producing the highest quality products at the lowest possible cost.
· Act as technical resource for product field support of customers, service personnel and field sales, assisting in addressing and resolving questions and problems.
· Participate in cross-functional teams to address and resolve manufacturing, design and quality problems, and ensure the continuous, on-going improvement of processes and methods.
· Suggest ideas for new products.
· Stay current on new developments in the industry.
· Keep informed of new parts or methods to improve products or product designs.
· Follow all housekeeping procedures.
· Assures compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and requirements, as well as Jor-Mac company policies and procedures.
