Description

We’re looking for a Design Engineer to help build our next generation Developer Experience (DevEx) platform at Citi. You’ll be joining a small, high-impact team, shaping the daily lives of our 50,000 engineers globally.
You’ll be comfortable with design, front-end development, can assist with user research, and are passionate about your user’s needs.
Where you’ll work
You’ll sit within Development Enablement, part of Citi’s CTO organisation – A group focused on innovation, developer platforms and internal tools. We operate like a startup inside a global bank: shipping fast and experimenting.
What you’ll do in your first year
By day 45 - Build a component used by engineers in production
You’ll identify a pain point in the engineering workflow and solve it - for example, jumping between a JIRA issue and related builds or pull requests. You will design in Figma, build the interaction design (e.g. CSS animations/d3.js) in Storybook, and ship the finished UI component to production.
Outcome: Your component will help engineers complete a key task at least 50% faster
By 3 months – Validate what we’re building and creating relationships
You’ll actively seek feedback through both informal and formal user testing sessions. You’ll will have established relationships with engineers across the org and begun capturing metrics to show your work is making a difference.
Outcome: Network of relationships outside the team, iterated on designs based on feedback and discovered a few actionable KPIs that can prove we’re solving real problems.
By 6 months - Establish a base of UI components and patterns that shape the way engineers interact with their developer workflows
You will have shipped a few components - for example, a CI/CD status view, or a widget that show production errors - and started extracting reusable patterns and best practices that form the foundation for our design.
Outcome: Several components built inside of storybook and shipped to production. Your components or designs will have also influenced 1-2 external teams across CTO and even inspired design changes across Citi.
By 12 months – Own and evolve key parts of the developer experience
You’ll own parts of the design and front-end implementations of complete workflows, such as being able to see the flow between a JIRA ticket all the way into production. You will have had meaningful impact on the lives of our users.
Outcome: Show real improvement in our DevEx metrics of Cognitive Load, Flow State, and Feedback Loops. Analytics to demonstrate engineers are using our app to move through their SDLC workflow faster e.g. from a JIRA ticket to its associated builds with a single click.
