JOB SUMMARY

As Design Manager at EASTCUT, you’ll lead an integrated design team helping shape component-based and modular buildings for schools, housing, and care facilities across Atlantic Canada. The Design Manager will oversee the planning, design, and implementation of structural projects, ensuring they are safe, cost-effective, and meet all regulations and client needs. They will lead a team of designers who will be responsible for creating detailed shop drawings for floors, wall, and roof truss units to be built on our production floor. This is a hands-on leadership role with significant visibility, direct connection to manufacturing, and growth opportunity as our team and systems expand.

QUALIFICATIONS


    • 10+ years of experience in structural systems design and engineered wood components

    • Proficiency with hsbCAD (AutoCAD-based), Revit, and Simpson Strong-Tie Component Solutions software is essential. Familiarity with Javelin or MiTek is an asset
    • Demonstrated leadership in design team management, scheduling, and systems setup
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, a customer service focus, and a professional demeanor
    • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering fundamentals, especially concerning wood truss roof, wall and floor design
    • Experience in design-for-manufacturing environments and model-based coordination (BIM) is valuable in aligning with our production-first approach
    • Working knowledge of the Canadian National Building Code (CNBC) and relevant structural guidelines for engineered wood systems is required
    • Enjoys hands-on collaboration with both technical staff and production teams
    • Understanding of Nova Scotia building codes
    • Strong visualization abilities, capable of conceptualizing complex conditions in wood structures based on plans and specifications

    Responsibilities

      • Lead, manage, and motivate a team of designers and architects, ensuring that all members are contributing to design discussions and addressing design issues that may arise during production

      • Provide guidance on technical aspects of projects and help resolve complex design challenges
      • Maintain a task matrix based on individual skills and software strengths
      • Build and develop the team by providing recognition, including positive and constructive feedback
      • Frequent interaction with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, engineers, architects, regulatory/jurisdiction authorities, and other industry professionals
      • Support DORA’s preconstruction team in ensuring design aligns with cost and schedule objectives
      • Participate in site reviews and gather lessons learned for continuous improvement
      • Engage in procurement conversations related to new equipment and system integration.
      • Lead the migration from Javelin to hsbCAD: planning, onboarding, training, and standardization.
      • Maintain and update design libraries, macros, templates, and automation tools
      • Establish and manage a structured engineering change management system
      • Contribute to innovation and product development initiatives through PDI
      • Coordinate with internal and external engineers, architects, and consultants
      • Oversee the entire design process, ensuring that structural designs align with project goals, timelines, and budgets and providing weekly progress reports
      • Review and approve design concepts and detailed plans, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with building codes and safety standards
      • Meticulously analyze the BIM model to extract accurate data regarding quantities and specifications
      • Performance
      • Be present on-site in Trenton at least 3 days a week to foster alignment between design and production
      • Engage in real-time problem-solving with plant supervisors and installers
      • Monitor and oversee the day-to-day operations of the design team to ensure efficient and consistent output
