Position Summary Community Coordinators are the frontline street squad driving Michigan FIRE (MF) / Michigan FIRE Action (MFA)’s mission in key regions and communities in Michigan. Community Coordinators participate in robust, on-the-ground civic engagement and education efforts as well as community, identity, and membership building programs focused on empowering young people, especially youth of color and working class youth. This role will be responsible for executing MF’s civic engagement and education efforts as well as community, identity, and membership building programs, manage event logistics as well as recruitment for those events, attend campus organizational meetings, and maintain social media channels to elevate civic content. This role is for someone energized by talking to new people, passionate about civic power, and eager to turn our targeted regions into hubs of youth democratic and community participation. The strongest candidates will be bold, creative, and deeply committed to meeting students where they are. Key Responsibilities Youth Community and Membership Building (90%): Canvassing, high traffic canvass, attend tabling events, and help Regional Organizers meeting young people in their cultural spaces with a culture-first approach. Using relational organizing, facilitate 1:1 conversations that encourage fellow young people to share how key issues (climate change, education, jobs, etc) and elections directly impact their lives. Leverage relational networks (clubs, organizations, friends, classes, professors, faculty, etc) to collaborate on events and other culture and identity building opportunities both on and off campus. Attend student organization meetings on campus and youth cultural/community events off campus. Administrative duties (10%) Coordinate event logistics in collaboration with the Relational Organizer, including planning, preparing, and recruiting for events. Attend regular team meetings, weekly 1:1s, and best practices session meetings. Help support their assigned region with data entry as needed. A successful candidate for this job will: Be comfortable approaching strangers, be eager to talk to as many students as possible. Have a passion for civic engagement and inspiring young people to get involved. Be excited to think outside the box and to ideate and innovate to find the most exciting and effective ways to talk to students. Be scrappy and flexible; able to manage several tasks simultaneously. Be a self-starter, exceptionally well-organized, and have strong time management skills. Be enrolled at one of our focus universities.
