The Development team is responsible for both the fundraising and marketing functions of House of Friendship, to grow financial support that sustains the mission of House of Friendship into the future, and to build awareness and affinity for our brand throughout Waterloo Region. The Development Manager is responsible for the insight-based planning, implementation and analysis of the Annual Giving program, including identifying, inspiring, thanking and reporting back to donors to effectively grow donations annually. Donor groups include all who give to the Annual Fund excluding Major Donors. The Development Manager will give leadership to the Annual Giving team.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Very strong leadership, team building and decision making skills required including demonstrated strength in coaching and developing people and teams with at least 3 years previous experience leading a team
  • Experience working with student and volunteers considered an asset
  • Experience with coaching and mentoring for personal growth and development, including the ability to coach others through conflict
  • Demonstrated skill in building and maintaining productive relationships (staff, community partners, funders)
  • Proficient donor-centric communication skills, both oral and written, that inspire and engage
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills with a passion for, and experience in, coaching and developing people and teams
  • Excellent insight-based strategy, decision-making and analysis skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent planning, organizational, follow through, process optimization and time management skills
  • Strong proficiency in Raiser’s Edge NXT that optimizes its benefit to the organization and to the individual users
  • Self-directed with high capacity to manage multiple priorities and timelines
  • Excellent ability to maintain confidentiality of key constituents at all times
  • Easygoing and approachable with a positive attitude

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Marketing, Fundraising, Communications or related field is required; CFRE designation or progress towards it is considered an asset
  • A ‘fundraising practitioner’ with a minimum of four (4) years demonstrated success leading high impact fundraising and stewardship events in the social profit sector
  • A natural, proven relationship builder and collaborator who is adept at creating authentic relationships with a wide variety of constituents including community leaders/partners, donors, sponsors, colleagues, and volunteers

CRITICAL SKILLS:

  • Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
  • Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required
  • Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
  • Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs
  • Experience with and commitment to using an anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery
  • Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude

Responsibilities
  • Using insights firmly rooted in solid fact-based analysis and fundraising best practices, plan, create and execute a robust Annual Giving program that delivers the budgeted growth with continual improvement, opportunity analysis, idea testing and priority-based decisions at the core
  • Includes all activities related to the identification, cultivation and stewardship of donors, results tracking and reporting, as well as House of Friendship events and gift processing
  • Effectively lead, inspire, mentor, develop and support direct reports
  • Collaborate with the other Development team colleagues to achieve Department objectives
  • Provide inspiration and support for the Annual Fund with the broader House of Friendship team
  • Build relationships that inspire donors, volunteers and community partners to support our mission
  • Successfully lead and implement change to achieve continual improvement
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the Donor Database Coordinator and team of users to optimize excellence in use, analysis, reporting and processes
  • Effectively inspire, thank and report back to donors to ensure strong retention and donation growth, ensuring full alignment with fundraising best practices
  • Support Development Director with ad hoc projects and initiatives as assigned
  • Represent Development at ad hoc events/committees as required
  • Lead, develop and support the team of Supervisors as well as their teams working within assigned programs, including staff, volunteers and students
  • Responsible for the healthy and safe operation of the programs; ensuring a physically and psychologically healthy work environment for all team members
  • Responsible for the allocation of staff, students and volunteers based on the needs of each program and/or site
  • Responsible for all aspects of program operation including program development and review, program budget, allocation of resources, and relationships with funders and community partners, staff and participant safety
  • Represent House of Friendship at various community development and neighbourhood related meetings and community forums; bringing relevant issues and solutions to the conversation
  • Take a lead role in community consultation and community leadership development initiatives
