Description The Development Officer advances the mission of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia by designing and implementing strategic fundraising initiatives that expand philanthropic support, deepen donor relationships, and strengthen the organization’s sustainability. This includes creating and executing giving strategies and leading efforts to significantly grow donation revenue. The Development Officer will play a key role in the development and ongoing operation of the organization’s fundraising arm that will take the form of a foundation, donor-advised fund, or other similar vehicle. This role requires initiative, creativity, and the ability to balance strategic vision with detail-oriented execution. The Development Officer must be a strong communicator, relationship-builder, and project manager, capable of inspiring generosity and stewarding meaningful donor engagement. This position reports to the Marketing Director. Requirements ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB · Develop and implement a comprehensive donor acquisition and retention plan to build long-term relationships and increase giving over time. · Create and launch a planned giving campaign, engaging supporters in legacy opportunities. · Design and execute a major gifts strategy to cultivate and solicit high-level donors. · Establish ambitious fundraising benchmarks. · Plan and execute at least one annual signature fundraiser to generate significant revenue and community visibility. · In collaboration with the marketing team, support the development and execution of multi-channel fundraising campaigns through direct mail, email, social media, and special events. · Manage and steward donor relationships with consistent communication, recognition, and personalized engagement. · Coordinate with the CEO, COO, and Board of Directors to identify prospects and support cultivation efforts. · Maintain accurate records of donor engagement and moves management in the agency’s CRM (Neon-One). · Provide regular progress reports and recommendations on development strategies. · Contribute to broader organizational initiatives, representing Senior Services with professionalism and passion in the community. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES · Strong fundraising, donor relations, and stewardship skills with proven ability to grow revenue. · Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. · Demonstrated success in designing fundraising strategies, campaigns, or events. · Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and major gift cultivation best practices. · Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to balance multiple priorities. · Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and donor databases (Neon-One preferred). · Ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative team environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE · Bachelor’s degree in Development, Nonprofit Management, Communications, Business, or related field, or commensurate experience. · Minimum of three years’ professional fundraising or development experience. · Demonstrated success in major gifts and planned giving. · Experience with nonprofit fundraising events and campaigns. WORK DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL • Ability to stoop, lift, finger – for example pick, pinch, or type and grasp. • Ability to clearly and concisely express and exchange detailed information and ideas to others accurately via spoken word · Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. · Ability to inspect and analyze figures, accounting items, written materials, newsprint, computer terminal characters, transcription, and other similar objects at distances generally close to the eyes. · The worker is subject to a variety of inside environmental conditions that may occur in an office, a private home, or elsewhere in the community including temperature variations, unpleasant odors, and potential allergens. · Although work inside is the standard, it is required that the individual be able to travel and may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions.
