JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Principal Infrastructure Environmental Health Practitioner (PIEHP), the postholder will discharge duties for all EH disciplines, but will be primarily focused on Private Water Supplies and the provision of wholesome water. This will involve acting as an SME focal point for the health aspects of all DIO Private Water Supplies, Environmental Health tasks and requests for specialist support. The postholder will provide SME advice in relation to Private Water Supplies, wholesome water and other water contaminants of public health significance (e.g. Per-and Poly Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)). The postholder will be responsible for the drafting, reviewing and maintenance of technical and contractual documentation, relating to DIO Private Water Supplies wholesomeness and standards.
The activities associated include providing specialist advice to all areas of the business on wholesome water fitness and standards, the health aspects of PFAS exposure, other EH advice, undertake visits and visual inspections as directed.
Whilst this role will be focused on Private Water Supplies, there is also a requirement to undertake food audits, food infrastructure project assessments and provide advice and guidance to the business on all areas of EH. This is role is therefore suited to an EHP with a strong food audit background as well as Private Water Supply Risk Assessments.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of principal legislative and supporting documents relating to water supplies, Environmental Health and Health and Safety Regulation.
  • Knowledge of Private and Public Water Supply standards and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of routine, developing and emerging workplace and accommodation hazards.
  • Knowledge and experience of assessing catering facilities through food law code of practice.
  • Experience of working in a professional capacity with statutory regulators.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyse relevant technical reports.
  • Wider professional experience in Environmental Health, Public Health and Water Safety.
  • Audit/inspection experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with building design teams, architects, and other building professionals.
  • Policy writing experience.
  • Experience of managing investigations and incidents.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge and experience of the role of statutory regulators.
  • Knowledge of the Defence estate.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with UK Armed Forces, contractors and Trade Unions.
  • Experience in carrying out risk assessment of Private Water Supplies.
  • Knowledge of PFAS compounds and their management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Degree educated in Environmental Health

TECHNICAL SKILLS

We’ll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • FSA Competency Framework – Section B2: Auditing
  • • Technical legislation for Private Water Supplies and Wholesome Water Standards. The Private Water Supplies (England) Regulations 2016 (and regional equivalents). The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016 (and regional equivalents).

EMPLOYMENT HOURS

The post advertised is for 37 hours net, however the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees. Flexible working, Part-time working and Job Share working patterns will be considered.
Where business needs allow, this role may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working, therefore you must consider if any of the above locations are within a reasonable travelling distance. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business (i.e., detached duty) or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
