This is a full-time position working 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. POSITION SUMMARY: The Direct Underwriter I role is primarily responsible for delivering exceptional service to both internal and external members. The position involves evaluating loan applications, conducting thorough reviews, and making timely, well-informed lending decisions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Review and render decisions on direct loan applications, ensuring adherence to established service level agreements (SLAs). Analyze credit reports, financial ratios, and other relevant data to support sound lending decisions. Assess applicant and co-applicant eligibility based on membership criteria, credit policies, and product guidelines. Detect and appropriately manage potentially fraudulent applications. Support portfolio management strategies to maintain target goals for Weighted Average Rate (WAR) and delinquency. Communicate clearly and professionally with internal loan officers regarding underwriting decisions, approval conditions, credit reports, and applicable federal regulations. Evaluate supporting documentation such as tax returns, pay stubs (including tip income and shift differentials), and other financial records to ensure accuracy and completeness. Actively engage in personal and professional development, embracing coaching and feedback. Build strong relationships with teammates, credit union staff through effective and respectful communication. Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills while adhering to lending compliance standards and mitigating risk. Represent the credit union positively through professional appearance and courteous demeanor. Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters related to the credit union, its members, and dealership partners. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Direct Lending Manager or Senior Direct Underwriter. Qualifications Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred. Required Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of consumer lending practices, including underwriting, loan processing, and risk management. Familiarity with federal and state lending regulations and compliance requirements. Understanding of financial products and services offered by credit unions. Experience Required: Minimum of 2 years’ lending experience in a financial institution or related entity preferred. Experience in a credit union or similar financial institution is highly desirable. HARD/TECHNICAL SKills/Abilities: Proficiency in lending software and loan origination systems. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and make informed decisions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). WORKING CONDITIONS Low to moderate noise Limited lifting up to 25 lbs.
