General Accountability Reports Directly To: Vice President, Strategic Business Unit Provides overall direction to the engineering function through development of engineering policies and procedures consistent with organizational requirements and corporate standards. Directs engineering resources on the business unit in order to efficiently improve the processes, procedures, methods and materials used in the repair and overhaul processes while ensuring product quality is maintained and striving for quality improvements. Direct Reports May Include: Manager, Engineering/Technical Services; Engineer/Engineering Technologist/Specialist - Customer Service, Performance, Process, Production, Project, Repair Development, Service; Administrator, Manager, Operation Support. Immune Specific Accountabilities Recognizes and understands flight/product safety critical parts and processes. Responsible for immediately reporting flight/product safety concerns. Participates in proactive risk analysis of flight/product safety critical parts and processes. Recognizes and understands the Just Culture policy. Specific Accountabilities Directs strategic business unit engineering activities and resources including supervision and training of personnel, representing engineering and product development functions. Develops and recommends business unit engineering policies and procedures consistent with company and strategic business unit objectives. Coordinates company engineering resources required for the support of strategic business unit objectives. Provides management review and control of all engineering work including project development, staff assignment and application of engineering principles throughout the business unit. Facilitates project teams by providing assistance in project planning, application of quality improvement tools, assistance in measures of performance selection, capital asset acquisition, tooling development and assessing training needs. Provides direction to ensure that training and education programs are implemented to increase engineering staff skills and to meet technological change requirements of the engineering function. Audits and reviews the quality of engineering programs and makes recommendations as appropriate. Analyzes existing production methods and recommends modifications necessary to improve and streamline the process. Evaluates new production technology and recommends re-engineering options to improve the economy and quality of products. Coordinates with technical support personnel to conduct prototype runs for products or processes. Reviews project results and interprets technical trends throughout all areas of the business unit. Implements environmental programs supporting corporate targets. Coordinates internal environmental reporting. Coordinates planning, organization, budgeting, program timing and specifications of all engineering projects and assures timely and high quality delivery. Directs and coordinates engineering activities designed to improve shop floor practice aimed at reducing non-conformance and improving product quality and reliability. Keeps abreast of engineering trends and developments for application in the business unit. Exercises authority in hiring, training, career development, performance appraisal, salary adjustments, promotion, discipline, health, safety and the general employee relations of direct reports. Actively participates in the management team(s), assisting with the development and realization of strategic plans, budgets, goals and outcomes. Carries out special projects as assigned. Technical Requirements Working knowledge of gas turbine engine theory and performance. Working knowledge of PC's in the current company operating system environment. Thorough knowledge of company processes, company instructions, rework option codes and rework process instruction manuals. Strong planning, organizational, analytical, leadership, interpersonal, decision making, oral and written communication skills. Strong project management skills. In jurisdictions governed by a regulatory body or with an association that is governed by local legal requirements, registration is required. University degree in mechanical or industrial engineering. Several years of supervisory experience in engineering design, manufacturing or production environment. Background Information The typical minimum level of education to perform this job competently is equivalent to completion of a university (bachelor) program in a specialized field of study and work. The work requires a sound understanding of the underlying theoretical principles and concepts associated with the subject area and an understanding of the relation of these to the responsibilities of the job. This specialized training is often recognized by a degree and/or professional designation. Directly/indirectly related work experience representing continuous learning and required for someone to perform this job competently is six to ten years. Ongoing work assignments typically have clearly defined goals, but no (or minimal) direction with respect to what action steps to follow. The incumbent's education, training, and previous experience will help ensure that the goal of the assignment can be clearly defined and understood (even if that means just knowing what relevant questions to ask), but the required/optional approaches to achieving the goal will often remain unclear, undefined and/or untested until the work assignment is well underway.
